Ridgewood 5th Grader Nathan Yu Earns National Recognition at U.S. Geography Championships in Orlando

Ridgewood NJ, Benjamin Franklin Middle School 5th grader Nathan Yu has made his hometown proud by finishing 5th in the nation at the U.S. Geography Championships in Orlando, Florida. The young geography whiz also advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Geography Bee and reached the quarterfinals of the National Geography Bee, cementing his place among the top geography students in the country.

🌎 Rising Star in Geography: Nathan Yu Represents Ridgewood on the National Stage

The U.S. Geography Championships is a prestigious academic competition that tests students’ knowledge of both U.S. and world geography, along with applications of geographic principles to real-world challenges. Designed for students in the Middle and Elementary School Divisions, the competition culminates in a high-stakes National Championship, where top scorers from across the country face off.

Competing against hundreds of bright young minds from across the United States, Nathan demonstrated exceptional understanding of geography, placing 5th overall, an outstanding achievement for a 5th grader competing at a national level.

🧠 What Is the U.S. Geography Championship?

The U.S. Geography Championships is an individual exam-based competition that challenges students with advanced questions on physical and human geography, cartography, geopolitics, and environmental studies. Participants qualify through regional or online tests and advance to the national finals held annually in Orlando, Florida.

Nathan’s success at the event also earned him spots in the U.S. Geography Bee Semifinal and the National Geography Bee Quarterfinal, two highly competitive contests that bring together the best of the best in student geography knowledge.

📚 About the National Geographic Bee

Though the National Geographic GeoBee was discontinued in 2019, it remains a legendary academic competition in the United States. Held from 1989 to 2019, it inspired students from grades 4 through 8 across all 50 states, U.S. territories, the District of Columbia, and Department of Defense schools overseas. Nathan’s participation in its legacy-style competition structure showcases a new generation of scholars continuing the tradition of excellence in geographic education.
