Ridgewood NJ, Each fall, thousands of high-performing high school students across the United States await the results of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program—a competition that awards $2,500 no-strings-attached college scholarships to the nation’s top academic achievers.
The scholarships are granted through the non-profit National Merit Scholarship Foundation (NMSF) and begin with students taking the PSAT/NMSQT during their junior year. High scorers are first named Commended Scholars, with the top-tier students advancing to semifinalist status.
From there, semifinalists must submit academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and personal achievements to qualify as finalists—a distinction that opens the door to scholarships from the Foundation, corporations, or partnering colleges.

New Jersey students face the single toughest competition in the country for these distinctions.
Semifinalists are in the top half of the top percentile of PSAT test-takers in their state, and the cutoff score in New Jersey is the highest.
All students take the same test at the very same time so there is no disputing the fact that New Jersey high schools crank out some seriously college-ready graduates. No wonder every top school has a sizable contingent of New Jersey students in its freshman class each year.
