the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, there will be a meeting of the BOE tonight on January 30 at which the lazy start , sorry late start initiative will be the only agenda topic. A couple of questions:
1. If the high schoolers are allowed to start 15, 30, or 45 minutes later each morning – what will stop them from staying up 15, 30, or 45 minutes later each night?
2. If the parents enforced a reasonable lights-out-devices-off bedtime for their teens, they would fall asleep. Darkness causes melatonin to kick in, and sleep follows. So, parents, why don’t you take control of your children’s bedtimes? You are, after all, the adults-in-charge in the household, aren’t you?
3. If teens in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s (you get it) were able to get up early for school and still go on to have happy and successful lives, why is it mysteriously impossible for teens to get up early now?
4. What are the kids going to do when they have to get a job?
Some of us at The Blog believe that the solution is simple – earlier to bed early to rise .

Apparently you haven’t read any of the research which addresses every one of these questions. No, as usual, you’re stuck on “if it was good enough for me, it’s good enough for these whippersnappers…”
another words you don’t know
what are tyhey going to do when they have to work for a living
you mean, what are they going to do when they have to go to Starbucks and Hot Yoga…
We’d rather spend money trying to solve a problem than use common sense.
Here we go again… these librards with their “science” and “doctors” are so soft. What ever happened to just working through it? You don’t need to be bright eyed and bushy tailed, just get up and get out. No way our schools should start later, we need to toughen these kids up. Maybe if they didn’t stay out at their “mostly peaceful” protests they’d be better rested.
But no, Ridgewood is rich and stupid, and these woke fools will go right along with this.
Soft..stop the nonsense
a solution in search for a problem
Administrators letting everyone know that they’re on the job.
The parents have ZERO control over their children. What are they, afraid of them? Take the phones and iPads away at a reasonable hour. Tell the kids to go to bed. Part of parenting g is leading by example.
Seriously folks, it is going to cost a ton of bucks to implement this plan. Bus schedules and do on. Plus a decrease in teaching minutes for each class. Who is OK with this? The kids will for sure just stay up later if they can sleep later. These whining loudmouths sho are spouting studies and statistics are ridiculous.
Yep lets reduce the academic hours to appeal to the teachers union.
Who among us wouldn’t like a few extra minutes of sleep? As working adults we learn that you have to hit the sack a little earlier in the evening. Teach this to your kids.
Here is a free math lesson. There are 24 hours in a day. A teen needs 9 hours of sleep. The teen has to get up at 7 to get ready for school. So what time do they need to go to sleep? Can you whining parents do this simple math word problem???
HEY!
My Snowflakes need their sleep.
The current schedule is fine. People need to manage time. Instead of bombing the BOE with these requests I don’t see anyone questioning what’s going with the curriculum about CRT and gender identity.
Lol, like any other Liberal agenda item…whatever you want to do to make you or your kids less competitive in the marketplace than mine, is ok by me. Later start time? Go for it! Remove all merit based distinctions in favor skin color? Go for it! Smoke weed? Go for it! Cut off your boobs or genitalia? Go for it! Abort your children? Go for it! Build so much crap in town that it looks like a city and taxes double? Go for it!
My house is sold and we are outta here!
Why is the LWV getting involved in a school related issue? They need to stay in their lane (whatever lane that may be?). The constant whining about the research is ridiculous. Research can be found to prove any side of an argument. Provide concrete plans instead of just throwing tantrums surrounding the argument “we need this”. The district needs a lot of things ahead of this.
LWV…did u see the council debate they tried to manage. Embarrassing..pretty sure our kids would have done a far better job. Please lets not have this org’s input
“If teens in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s (you get it) were able to get up early for school and still go on to have happy and successful lives, why is it mysteriously impossible for teens to get up early now?”
One word: cellphones.
How many parents demand that kids’ cellphones be turned off at a certain hour and not even remain in the bedroom? How many parents do it themselves? That alone would change a lot. The light from the screen DARES a person to shut it off and go to sleep.
Sure, I got up for school at the prescribed hour during some of the named decades, but as a lifelong “owl” (rather than “lark”), I would have cried with relief to be able to get up later. I would have been more alert and felt less muzzy all day.
Circadian rhythms are a thing. When I had kids and then when I worked in an office, which overlapped, again my wake-up time was predetermined. When they moved out and I quit to freelance from home, I reverted.
“another words you don’t know”
Huh?
I’m assuming “In other words, you don’t know.” Speech-to-text screwup.
You’d think someone who has the time to censor comments would take the time to proofread…
Should have read “in other words, you don’t know.”
Should have read that way. Maybe if school started later when he was a kid, he would have been awake more and learned more in class.
Here we go again…liberal way of life..I am a victim Lets complain, whine, protest because I don’t want to work hard to earn my way. I just want to bitch and moan vs everyone one who disagrees w my view. Then I want the gov’t to give me as much free stuff so I am conditioned to be dependent my entire life.
