Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Crew took home a gold medal to finish out its 2023 fall regatta season at the Hidden River Chase, a 4,150-meter head course race on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The meet, hosted by the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association, was open to high school athletes from ninth through 12th grade, and attracted 217 entries from 28 clubs.
Junior Lucas Evers, along with freshman Tristan Riedel and sophomore Sam Scharfenberg, led the team with two top-three finishes each on the day. In the Boys 1st Junior 1x race, Evers finished third (15:56), and he joined with Riedel, Scharfenberg, and Will Nasr to take home the gold in the Boys 1st Junior 4x race (13:27).
Scharfenberg and Riedel paired up for the Boys 1st Junior 2x race, coming in third (14:46).
In the Boys 2nd Junior singles race, James Ryan scored a second place finish(16:41), breaking up a race that was dominated by Malvern Prep, which had its rowers take first, and third through sixth places.
Sunday’s performance by Ridgewood Crew was a strong finish to the 2023 head racing season. Across the four regattas this fall season, the team garnered 23 medals, including six golds.
“We are very happy with the results from the fall season. Our young team won a medal in every regatta,” said Ridgewood Crew head coach Boris Roque-Alvarez. “The team continues to build experience and will be practicing through the winter in preparation for the Spring season.”
The Schuylkill River got its name, meaning “Hidden River”, from Dutch settlers. This regatta is named after the Schuylkill river, which is “hidden” by the larger Delaware river.
