  1. I wish Chuck would schedule games with the Parochials…

  2. I thought Fairlawn became a group 3 school sports wise?

  3. Forget the paraochials. This is amateur sports not a recruiting based program funded by sneaker companies. Let them go pro and play with each other.

  4. Brian – okay but then don’t trumpet these hollow wins over teams that represent the Potemkin Village conference, i.e. Passaic, Eastside, JFK, Teaneck, Hackensack, etc.

  5. They are wins against other schools that create teams from people who live in the town and go to school. They are wins against similar programs. Schools that play HS sports the way it is supposed to be played. Sure these teams lack the talent of semi-pro teams but that does not diminish a win against a similar program.

  6. Chuck doesn’t schedule the games, the league does and the league is structured the way it is because of the long ago lawsuit by the Parochials (Bergen Catholic) that they had “the right” to play the public schools. That ruling turned HS sports in North Jersey upside down. Don Bosco is a national power drawing kids from three different states and beyond on its roster, same for Bergen, PC, and Joe’s. IHA hasn’t lost a swim meet in something like 10 years and their softball teams and basketball teams are tremendous as well.

I give the parochials all the credit they deserve for what they are accomplishing but when you actively go out and recruit 7th and 8th graders for your athletic programs, when you hire people only to coach your sports teams, (not teach classes) when you allow kids to transfer in and out at the drop of a hat based on how much playing time they are going to get, and when you offer free tuition based on athletic ability, you better be good. And you shouldn’t be playing public schools who are fielding teams built on students who live in that particular town.

The Public school divisions are based on enrollment so Ridgewood ends up playing the larger public schools in North Jersey including the city schools who do not have very strong football programs right now. But at the same time Ridgewood lost 31 seniors and is playing a very young group of kids including a ton of sophomores. Those schools should be able to compete against us. The schedule gets tougher as the season moves along with games against, Paramus, Hackensack, PCT, and Bergen Catholic all games Ridgewood will be the underdog.

  7. On the recruiting, to me one of the most absurd thing is that these Catholic schools go out and recruit kids who are from other faiths. It is one thing for them to educate all who want to attend. It is another to actively recruit a non-Catholic and then spend money which was donated to a Catholic institution to educate that young man or woman. There appear to be some pretty warped priorities if you ask me.

    1. Brian you havent meet the Sport Mafia in Ridgewood lol

  8. I’ve heard that recruiting hooey for 40 years.

Back in the 70’s Chris Donfield from Bergen Catholic was supposed to have recruited. Not likely. Never happened.

Do you think Greg Toal or Nunzio Campanile wants to spend their Sundays patrolling Pop Warner games looking for talent ?

More likely what happens is Daddy wants his kid to play on a good team and the student-athlete attends a summer camp held at the school in order to generate interest.

My buddy here at work is Episcopalian yet he and his 2 brothers all graduated from Don Bosco.

    Why ?

Cuz Bosco had a hockey program, the local HS did not. Nothing sinister here at all.

  9. Oh I forgot to type LOL

  10. Good players are drawn to the big name schools. Just like when they go to college.

The catholic schools in Bergen County are drawing in the talent. Those who stay behind can be big fish in a little pond.

  11. Maroons got spanked 2 weeks in a row….

  12. PCT beat RHS on Friday…Maroons now 5-3. Will likely have to play the number 1 or 2 seed in the first round of the playoffs.

  13. Bergen Catholic beat the Maroons the other night. They’ve lost 4 in a row.

They are the 7th seed in the playoffs. They play Union City on Friday. I think they’ll beat UC since Hudson Cty football is not as strong as it used to be.

  14. Montclair won their 3rd straight Sectional title….would’ve been 4 in a row is the NJSIAA had the stones to award the title won by North Bergen back in 2011. NB used an illegal player and was forced to vacate the title.
