Leaf collection will be outsourced in one area of Ridgewood this fall.
Last week, the Village Council awarded a $65,000 contract for leaf pickup in Ridgewood’s leafiest section (including the Heights) to the sole bidder, Hawthorne-based Downes Tree Service. The council also approved plans and specifications for leaf pickup, removal and hauling prepared by the village.
The revised plans and the outsourcing are part of an effort, helmed by Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld, to improve resident satisfaction with leaf collection this fall. Sonenfeld involved workers in a recent leaf collection improvement discussion.
“This is part of our ‘turning over a new leaf,'” quipped Sonenfeld, when the contract was introduced Oct. 1.
Addressing the costs, Sonenfeld said, “We have some real offsets here in the case of not spending on overtime this year.”
According to Director of Operations Frank Moritz, the point of the change is “to have a better product at the end of the day for an equal amount of money.

Just the beginning. The garage is next.
Rained like cats & dogs yesterday….leaf piles against the curbs prevented water from flowing down to the sewers.
Remember to leave room for rain to flow unimpeded to the sewers….
