With coin meters becoming obsolete, Ridgewood may soon implement “cutting-edge” technology that lets users pay with their phone to park.

The council last Wednesday discussed three parking proposals, but ultimately expressed support for piloting an option that would require no capital investment for the village except for minor signage costs: Parkmobile, a smartphone app that will let people pay by phone and remotely extend their parking time.

If a resolution to award a contract to Parkmobile is approved at the next council meeting, then some concurrent ordinances would also need to be passed, according to Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld.

It would then take several weeks to get the pilot going, starting in the lots only, in the first phase of implementation.

“It’s at least a six week to eight week implementation time frame,” Sonenfeld said last Thursday, noting that the efforts are very “preliminary.” “If we can get it done faster, we will obviously.

  1. Sounds like a good idea. We are finally coming into the late 20th century with our parking.

  2. At Park & Ridge a real bummer. I use P & R all the time . I don’t have smart phone. I don’t like using credit cards so often

“Cutting edge” tech cuts people out; In NYC and all over this great coutnry choice reigns in parking lots and at meters; with credit card or coins.

Public transportation is public not for those only who wish to use smart phones. And pay an extra 35 cents a pop.

  3. Not everyone has a smartphone. No parking options for those people who wish to shop. Way to drive away those with cash.

  4. The smartphone app is just ONE way to pay. For the 7 people out there who still don’t have a smartphone yet, they can use plastic. Don’t even try to suggest that people don’t have credit/debit cards.

  5. Let’s work on cost reductions outsourcing less village new positions with pensions and exploding benefit liabilities even if they cud cap the budget as a start then work on consolidation of services with other towns sharing vendor workforces

  6. Declan, is your real name Paul Pucciarelli or Albert Aronsohn?
