Ridgewood, NJ – A peaceful Sunday morning on October 5th took a sharp turn for a homeowner on the 400 block of Hillcrest Road when they made an alarming discovery: an unknown individual asleep in their garage. The swift response by the Ridgewood Police Department Patrol Division resulted in a rapid arrest, turning a potential trespass into a dual-purpose law enforcement action.
The Morning Intrusion
In the early hours of Sunday, October 5, a resident of a single-family home on Hillcrest Road discovered the unauthorized sleeper and immediately contacted police. The suspect, a resident of Passaic County, quickly fled the garage on foot upon being confronted.
Thankfully, the pursuit was short-lived. Officer Michael Karcher of the Ridgewood Police Patrol Division was on the scene quickly, showcasing exceptional patrol skills by locating and apprehending the fleeing suspect.
The Twist: An Active Traffic Warrant
The incident didn’t end with the apprehension. During the process of confirming the individual’s identity, Officer Karcher’s thorough investigation uncovered an unexpected detail: the suspect had an active traffic warrant in effect.
The individual was subsequently transported to a business address in Paterson and was released on his own recognizance specifically in connection with the pre-existing traffic warrant.
What’s Next for the Suspect?
While the individual was released concerning the traffic warrant, the legal situation regarding the garage incident is far from over.
The Ridgewood Police Department has confirmed that criminal charges for the Hillcrest Road criminal trespass/unlawful entry incident are currently under consideration and review. This means the Passaic County resident could still face charges for breaking into the home’s garage.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of vigilance and the dedication of the Ridgewood Police Department in maintaining the safety and security of the community. A quick-thinking resident and a responsive, diligent officer ensured a potentially dangerous situation was resolved quickly and effectively.

And then they let him go. Maybe hold him. Run a back ground check He could have hurt some one. Why was he even there? Did Ridgewood police look into him at all?
Who was the guy in the white Mercedes SUV driving up Glen yelling at the cops to stop Boyd from taking photos? Funny when the cops just signaled him to move along and waved hello at Boyd.
