>Ridgewood Police Officer Assaulted Near Starbucks

>Ridgewood Police Officer Sean Amaruso was assaulted on Saturday evening as
he attempted to detain a individual involved in suspected narcotics activity
at the rear of Starbucks on East Ridgewood Avenue.
The suspect eluded Amaruso and other uniformed patrol officers by fleeing on
foot. However, his identity was determined and communicated to plain
clothes officers; an imminent arrest is expected.

Although Amaruso did not require medical attention, this incident
nonetheless underscores the relatively dangerous nature of a police
officer’s daily routine, even in a seemingly safe community such as
Ridgewood.

The Fly wonders when Ridgewood PD’s brass is going to finally crack down on
loiterers in the front and rear of Starbucks. Obviously, more than coffee
is being sold in the area.

  1. >We can thank the village council for creating a downtown area where kids from surrounding towns are dropped off for an evening. It’s not our Village anymore people so get used to the idea.

  2. >Thank God officer Amaruso is okay. I hope all our men (and women?) in blue are wearing bulletproof vests.

Also that parking lot needs to be better lit at night.

  3. >cops need to really start strictly enforcing the no loitering and no smoking by minors laws in the downtown

  4. >Ridgewood isnt a little village anymore, its more like a small city. What makes things worse is that police is way understaffed, the number of police officer hasn’t increased in decades while population is increased rapidly.

Lets get real here, you cant cut public safety, it never works and it never will. If you want to see what happens when you cut essential services look at NYC in the 70’s, Detroit in the 80’s, Newark in the 90’s and Camden today.

  5. >I hope the officer is ok. I want to thank him for being so aware and so involved in our kids welfare. 99.9% of the kids in town are good kids. Things like this happen. Given the amount of people in town there is a surprising low number of incidents on any given day. Thanks again Officer Amaruso.

  6. >unfortunately anyone can go anywhere without leaving their criminal history at home.scumbags visit nice towns..if the local pd put the squeeze on the dirtbags…some knee jerk liberal would be out there defending the criminal element…puts our local officers in a difficult predicament bc i am sure they can figure out who the dirtbags are easily enough… be interesting to find out where the creep calls ‘home’. home they lock up the creep and THROW the book at him/this cannot be tolerated

  7. >well kids need to go some place.so beef it up and get to the gym.

  8. >See what happens when you bring a chain into our little sleepy town?

  9. >Are you reading this Jacques Harlow? You who voted NO for two new police cars?

  10. >so painting some old police cars and buying some new ones would do what to stop drug dealing? Buy some lites for the parking lot

  11. >Drug dealing will always be around as will lunatics like the guy who walked into our post office and massacred the postal workers. Making sure our police officers have new police cars and selling the old police cars to raise money for better lighting behind stores just might deter the drug dealing … at least behind Starbucks.

  12. >I do believe there were many bloggers who a few months ago who made statements regarding the police and Starbucks!! One comment that sticks out in my mind was something like maybe the cops should be worried about more important things like the pedestrian crosswalks instead of harassing the kids at Starbucks. Isn’t it funny how people are now changing their tune?? First it’s kids loitering, then it’s kids selling drugs and now cops are being assaulted. What’s next?? GUNS??? Oh but wait, I forgot residents and the council feel that recreational fields and Graydon pool upgrades are so much more important. HEY VILLAGE COUNCIL……GET YOUE DAMN PRIORITIES STRAIGHT BEFORE ANOTHER COP OR A RESIDENT GET’S HURT!!!!

  13. >Unfortunately from what I have heard, this is just one of many recent assaults on officers in our village. Apparently two other officers were assaulted that same evening while trying to assist an emotionally disturbed person. I am told that one officer has been off work for few months due to injuries from an assault. I’m sure they understand the dangers involved in their jobs, but it doesn’t appear that the manager and council do. It is ridiculous that the police have to fight for proper equipment to protect us. Most even more disturbing is the town keeps on down sizing the number of police officers. So there are less officers out there protecting our streets but the council and manager waste our tax dollars on horse farms and god knows what else. Here are a few more questions. Why are we paying for an audit of the police department, at the request of the council and Village manager? Don’t they approve the police budget? Are they not the ones who approved the creation of a second captain’s position as well as all of the other controversial management positions in the village? Maybe we should be auditing how the manager and council are spending our tax dollars. Most of our moved here because the reputation of the school system and the towns reputation as a safe community. Both of those reputations appear to be in danger from what I can see and have heard.

  14. >I grew up here. And I’m old. Not real old, but not in my 30’s anymore. The teens smoking, the kids coming in from other towns, it’s the same as it was in the 70’s. The only difference (albeit a big one) is that now there are many more families hanging around town at night. With strollers and little kids going out to dinner. Parents almost never took there kids out to dinner back then. They were glad to go out without them. But another change is in the boldness and complete disrespect some people have toward the law. If we were drinking beer in Van Ness Square, we made sure we hid it if we saw a cop car.

  15. >I grew up here….thats right very right I grew up here too …but kids dealing dope didnt fight with cops either and I used to get in a lot of trouble but would never assult a cop or even think about it …these are pro drug dealers we need to go put up the spot lights and the TV cameras in the parking lot

  16. >Why don’t you dopes blame this on Susan Sherill since you blame her for everything else that happens in the Village?

  17. >Because Susan lives in Glen Rock so the GR police will have to deal with her.

  18. >What a shame that we have recently been made aware of the “dangerous” nature of being a Ridgewood Police Officer. Wasn’t it earlier this summer that another cop was injured trying to apprehend a suspect during an attempted robbery? Wasn’t that the same cop who was caught behind Starbuck’s (when he was a detective)with a 19 year old girl…on duty, in a Ridgewood Police car? What is it with Starbuck’s and the cops? Maybe the cops should spend some more time at the gym.

  19. >Hey, PJ, what is your problem about printing something negative about Graydon Pool staff? I’ve written twice about issues there and you haven’t published my comment. Why not? Are they (or their reputation) protected by you? You print negative comments about all other areas of the village! Why leave out Graydon Pool staff?

  20. >that was a low blow 9:24 PM

  21. >well o well .huh. hummmmmmm.whats going to happen next.
