Two police recruits whose conditional employment offers were recalled in January may be on target to re-join the force in March. The Ridgewood Council reached a consensus Wednesday night on a draft ordinance that would essentially eliminate the cap placed on the number of patrol officers in the village police department.

The proposed ordinance is scheduled for introduction at a Feb. 19 council meeting. If the change is passed in March, the two officers will likely enter the Essex County Police Academy.

Current Ridgewood code establishes a department maximum of 30 patrol officers. On Jan. 17, Police Chief John Ward extended conditional offers of employment to two recruits, both of whom are related to current or former members of the police department. Days after the hiring decisions, Village Council members noted that the two hires pushed the officer roster beyond the allowable amount.

  1. Yea OK. The are just regrouping after the public caught on.

  2. two more with bad hair cut’s.

  3. Told you this would happen. No harm to the recruits. They got a good job, worth the wait

  4. ok… but no harm? Could you pay bills without any income for over two months? Would you feel comfortable without health insurance for extended period of time?

remember these two men live in Ridgewood…Rent aint cheap…

Not to mention they never said that these two candidates would go through. They said they would remove the cap.

  5. Maybe we need a few less cops and more bodies in the DPW. And oh yeah, does anyone know what this will cost the village over the next five or ten years?

  6. # 5 what do you care what it cost. You don’t live in Ridgewood.

  7. #5 less then the overtime it cost to pay senior officers to fill open postions. Did you watch the meeting?

  8. No number 5 doesn’t get on TV where he lives.

  9. ” May” Let me tell you. This is about the time they appoint their hand picked Village Manger and she or he will put the brakes on these appointment. The residents should not worry about nepotism in this town. They should worry about politic cronyism. R.

  10. Looking for employment. Just support me in the election.

  11. Cronyism is partiality to long-standing friends, especially by appointing them to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications. Hence, cronyism is contrary in practice and principle to meritocracy. Lets see who this Concile appoints as the Village Manager.

  12. Great….these 2 will be working the crosswalk stings in no time.

  13. ^ how do you know, I’m in town longer then you little boy.now go bull shit some one else.

  14. How do you know?

#4, are you seriously implying these kids are paying rent and don’t have healthcare ? Due to their legacy status, surely they are living with their parents in Ridgewood and have health care coverage under their parent’s coverage ? That’s why were in this mess in the first place – seven officers will retire next year because the terms of their current contract are so generous – max of $400 family healthcare coverage, $5 drug co-pays, $15 doctor’s visits, 4% annual pay increases, contibuting less than 10% of their annual income towards their own pensions, etc.

  16. Charlie we’re not in a mess because of the cop’s and fireman, take a look at the school budget over 90 million $ and the cop and fire contribute 10% so stop lying.

  17. It’s no lie – it’s in the CBAs on the Village website. Fire contributes the most of their salaries towards their own pensions at 10%. So you’re blaming the teachers ? Seems like the average – not median – VoR salaries for police are higher than those for fire and teachers. Add in today’s value of the future value of pensions & healthcare for life for those with 25 years of service, and it’s pretty obvious that VoR police are doing way better than the average (not median) household in Ridgewood. That’s why seven officers are retiring at the end of the current CBA; locking in an incredible deal while they still can.

  18. #15 haha you assume to much. One of the candidates is almost thirty! And had a job with healthcare….

  19. I know one of the candidates.

    He’s 27

    Does not live at home.

And has had his own inssurance since he returned from college. So this “kid” is not your typical ridgewood “kid” . He was and is a hard worker.

  20. Charlie shut up

  21. Yes #20 he sits in his million plus house and wants everyone else to downsize so he doesn’t have to pay high taxes. Maybe he living above his means and has to downsize.

  22. #18 He had health insurance until the town told him he had a job.

  23. #15 number 19 is right but the bigger picture here does it matter this whole mess was mishandled by the council.

  24. This issue here is that new Police hires will be cheaper than the seven retiring officers and their full pensions & healthcare benefits for life. Love how the teachers and the “million plus” homeowners are always to blame – it’s clear there are bunch of retired municipal workers with an axe to grind on this site. Maybe you should just enjoy your +$100K pensions for life and basically free healthcare and stop complaining about teachers and tax payers ? And “shut up” is rude.

  25. But needed under the circumstances.

  26. What circumstances are those #20? It’s guys like you who created this mess over decades. NJ has the worst finances of any state in the US, and some of the highest property taxes in the entire country. We have $85bn in underfunded pension & “pay-as-you-go” healthcare benefits, which is 3.4 years of current state property taxes. That’s your mess. The younger recruits will help short-term, but the overall problem isn’t going away. Your solution is to keep raising property taxes every year; I’m glad that works for you. But please don’t be rude.

  27. Ploce and fire are fully funded.
