In a corner of the Ridgewood Public Library’s (RPL) second floor sits an economically sized room that, on first glance, appears no different from any other library room. There are computers, stocked book shelves, tables and an office. But there is also a locked door at the back of this room, and the historical archive housed behind it distinguishes the room as something entirely different.

Since its official dedication in June, the Bolger Heritage Center at the Ridgewood Public Library has both expanded and consolidated the village’s collection of local historical documents for easy access by residents and local historians. Based in the aforementioned room, it is managed by librarian and Village Historian Peggy Norris and contains documents ranging from house deeds and old zoning maps to Village Council minutes and high school yearbooks.

The idea for the center took root as far back at 1995, when Library Director Nancy Greene first arrived in Ridgewood.
