RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Less than a month after severe flooding from the July 14 rainstorm caused over $50,000 in damage to two high school athletic fields, Ridgewood Public Schools has announced both facilities are officially back open and safe for play.

While Ridgewood recorded “only” 1.86 inches of rain during the storm, it was enough to make the Hohokus Brook overflow, pushing floodwater onto the RHS Stadium Field and nearby Stevens Field.

Following emergency repairs and turf maintenance, the district confirmed both fields passed G-max safety testing, a turf industry standard used to measure shock absorption and reduce risk of head injuries. The tests were conducted following ASTM protocols to ensure the surfaces were safe for athletes.

In a message to the school community on August 4, Ridgewood Public Schools wrote:

“RHS Stadium and Stevens Fields are now officially open and ready for play.”
“Thank you for your patience as we completed these repairs.”

The Board of Education is now evaluating future mitigation steps, after reporting $50,380 in damage from the flood event. Long-term solutions to protect the fields from future storms may be discussed in upcoming meetings.

Back in action: Practices and games are expected to resume on schedule for fall sports, including football, soccer, field hockey, and marching band.

  3. Will need to be repaired again this year around late August to early September.
