S. Jersey Lawmaker Moves to Ban After-School ‘Activity Fees’
by KYW’s Ed Kasuba
A South Jersey lawmaker is sponsoring legislation prohibiting school districts from imposing “activity fees” on students who want to take part in extracurricular activities.
Gloucester County assemblyman John Burzichelli sees what he calls a trend by school districts to charge students who take part in after-school activities such as sports.
Burzichelli (right) believes fees for extracurricular activities are wrong:
“If a program is considered to be worthy enough to be part of a young person’s well-rounded education, there should not be an à la carte charge. There should not be an additional charge for a child who wants to take part in theatre, in class plays, in marching band, and various athletic teams.”
>Titus is done already. The new “interim” is Dr. Paul Arilotta.
>They pulled this crap at my Alma Mater a while back and there was nothing the students could do about it because it was imposed on all students even if you were not involved in a sport activity.
Maybe if the Maple Park Field didn’t go over budget by over $200,000.00 the Board would have been able to handle this. $80 million and they are still milking money out. What if your student is involved in more than one sport. I think we need an audit for both the village and the board and teach them how to budget and spend money. i.e. – you get estimates from your vendors monthly (as opposed to quarterly or bi-annually) instead of letting your attorneys overcharge you by 110% of your annual budget to steal a parking lot.
Its hard to believe the cost is to run athletics – When I went to RHS I used a 20 year old track uniform – 10 year old football dummies and I bought my own wrestling equipment.
It sounds like the busses are the problem – And it sounds like they are a problem because they are not getting paid.
>I didn’t know that the Stock Club used busses? Or for that matter, the Entrepreneur Club. Oh, wait they don’t but you have to pay anyway if your child enrolls in either (or both) of these clubs and no other…
hmmm. the pea isn’t under the busses shell either.
>But the Stock Club and the Entrpreneur Club do have faculty advisors. They use facilities. They probably make photocopies. Might not those be some of the expenses involved with extracurricular activities?
