Ridgewood NJ, a Ridgewood High School student is proving that service comes from the heart—and the playlist! Matthew Moomjy, a dedicated Ridgewood High School senior and Eagle Scout, is transforming nursing home visits with his ingenious, music-based initiative called “Maroon Tunes.”
This unique take on the classic “Name That Tune” game show is part of Moomjy’s quest for the U.S. Congressional Bronze Medal, and it’s hitting all the right notes with Bergen County seniors.
Music as Medicine: Unlocking Long-Term Memory
“Maroon Tunes” is more than just a game; it’s a therapeutic bridge to the past. Moomjy plays classic tunes on his cell phone, encouraging nursing home residents to recall the song’s title, lyrics, and, most importantly, the memories and experiences associated with the music.
“Music has this amazing ability to bring people together, to unlock memories and to make people smile,” Moomjy said. “That’s what ‘Maroon Tunes’ is about.”
His recent visit to the Van Dyk Nursing Home in Montclair was a huge success. Activity Coordinator Michelle Pannullo praised the interaction: “He provided meaningful interaction and a break from routine… The staff members said residents were still talking about the event, recalling the songs days later.”
Inspiring Community Service in Bergen County
Moomjy, who is also a member of the school’s crew team, plans to expand “Maroon Tunes” to more facilities throughout the region. His goal is to not only bring smiles to seniors but also to inspire his peers to engage in meaningful community service.
The initiative highlights the powerful impact students can have by using simple talents to connect with and serve others.
“Anyone can do something,” Moomjy noted. “It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to come from the heart.”
The U.S. Congressional Bronze Medal recognizes students who excel in personal development, physical fitness, and community service—a mission Moomjy is clearly fulfilling with his heartfelt musical outreach.
