Winter Weather Update: Ridgewood Suspends Rear-Yard Trash Collection—What You Need to Know

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, With more snow in the forecast for North Jersey, the Village of Ridgewood is taking proactive steps to keep our community and essential workers safe.

To protect sanitation crews from icy conditions and hidden hazards, rear-yard collection remains officially suspended. Until further notice, residents must transition to curbside pickup to ensure their trash and recycling are collected on schedule.

How to Prep Your Trash for Pickup

To avoid missed collections and help our crews work efficiently, please follow these guidelines:

  • Move it to the Curb: All trash and recycling containers must be placed at the curb.

  • Keep Streets Clear: Do not place containers in the street, as this interferes with snowplows and emergency vehicles.

  • Limited Space? If snowbanks have taken up your curb space, you may place your containers on your driveway apron.

  • Safety First: Rear-yard service is suspended specifically to prevent slips and injuries to the sanitation team. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!

When Will Rear-Yard Service Resume?

Village officials are monitoring weather and ground conditions closely. A formal reassessment will take place at the beginning of next week. Residents will be the first to know when the suspension is lifted via these official channels:

  1. I’l bring an envolope

  2. I’ll take a deduction on my property taxes. My driveway is dry and has been.

  3. They did the math already, if they want to curbside sanitation it’s only about $500 per household in savings on your tax bill.

    1. I doubt its that much savings. The current union contract is ‘task work’, so if the route is ‘projected’ to take 8 hours, they get 8 hours of pay even if they haul ass and get it done in 4 hours (after which they can go home)
Simple solution, make a reasonable contract, and those days we get curbside in a snow event, assign the employees to plow snow, as they do in NYC.

  4. I’d signup for curbside to get the $500 tax savings.
