Ridgewood NJ, Protecting your power—and your property—is the goal of a major upcoming maintenance project in the Village of Ridgewood. Starting the week of March 16, 2026, PSE&G will begin a comprehensive tree-pruning initiative throughout the area to clear branches that interfere with overhead power lines.

This proactive work is designed to prevent power outages and ensure that electric service remains stable, particularly as we move into the spring and summer storm seasons.

What Ridgewood Residents Need to Know

While the sight of tree trimming can be concerning for homeowners, the Village and PSE&G are working to ensure the process is as smooth as possible:

  • Start Date: Pruning is expected to begin on or about March 16 and will continue intermittently throughout the year.

  • Property Notification: If your property is directly affected, PSE&G will provide advance notice (typically via door hangers) before work begins.

  • Least Invasive Methods: Village representatives have met with PSE&G and their landscaping contractors to stress the importance of performing the work with minimal impact on the health and aesthetics of our local trees.

  • Responsibility: Please note that this is a utility-mandated safety project. The work is managed and controlled by PSE&G, not the Village of Ridgewood.

Why Is This Pruning Necessary?

Vegetation is one of the leading causes of power interruptions in New Jersey. By maintaining a safe distance between branches and high-voltage lines, PSE&G can significantly reduce the risk of:

  1. Storm-related blackouts caused by falling limbs.

  2. Electrical fires from branches rubbing against energized wires.

  3. Equipment damage that can lead to prolonged repair times.

Pro-Tip for Homeowners: If you notice a branch touching a wire or leaning dangerously, do not attempt to trim it yourself. Stay at least 10 feet away and contact PSE&G directly at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).

  1. Lets not plant trees on the side overhead wires

  2. We need leaders that can influence external points of contact who impact our village. Why isn’t our council working with the other towns regarding affordable housing. Why couldn’t we help influence NJ Transits decision to leave Brookside as a two way street over the HHK tracks. Why can’t we influence the county to fix Franklin Ave and to conduct a safety and traffic study. We can’t even influence the timing of street paving.
