RIDGEWOOD, NJ – Ridgewood Water has reached a critical milestone in its mission to deliver the cleanest possible water, announcing the delivery of advanced filtration vessels to two key treatment facilities in Bergen County. These massive installations mark the final major construction step before the new systems become operational next year, ensuring the removal of harmful PFAS “forever chemicals” from the local water supply.
This multi-million dollar investment underscores Ridgewood Water’s commitment to not just meeting, but surpassing the strictest federal guidelines for water purity.
A Dual Approach to Clean Water
Ridgewood Water, which serves several municipalities including Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff, is implementing two different, highly effective treatment technologies tailored to the specific needs of each facility:
1. Ames PFAS Treatment Facility (Wyckoff)
The Ames facility is receiving Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) vessels.
- Technology: GAC works by passing water through specialized carbon material, which adsorbs the PFAS chemicals like a sponge.
- Capacity: The six new vessels delivered to the Wyckoff site are designed to treat an impressive 2.1 million gallons of water per day (MGD).
2. West End PFAS Treatment Facility (Ridgewood)
The West End facility is receiving Resin Ion Exchange vessels.
- Technology: Ion exchange uses a porous resin to physically attract and trap the negatively charged PFAS molecules, pulling them out of the water stream.
- Capacity: The two vessels delivered to the Ridgewood location will treat up to 620,000 gallons of water per day (GPD).
Setting a New Standard for Purity
Once both the Ames and West End facilities are fully operational next year, the treated water will meet a standard of purity that goes above and beyond current regulations.
The new systems are engineered to ensure all regulated PFAS compounds will be undetectable in the treated water. This significantly surpasses the current U.S. EPA standard of 4 parts per trillion (ppt), providing an extra layer of safety and peace of mind for residents.
The successful delivery of these massive filtration vessels brings the region one step closer to permanently removing these persistent environmental contaminants from the public water source, securing a safer, cleaner future for Bergen County families.
