RIDGEWOOD, NJ – This Monday, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Historic Sites Council will hold a critical public hearing on Ridgewood’s controversial plan to cut down over 180 mature trees to build a large artificial turf field near the Revolutionary War-era Zabriskie-Schedler property.
The proposed site sits adjacent to residential homes and directly above the environmentally sensitive Saddle River, raising serious concerns about historic preservation, environmental impact, and community health.
Why the Proposal Is Sparking Outrage
🌳 Loss of 180+ mature trees – Essential for air quality, stormwater absorption, and wildlife habitat.
🏠 Impact on nearby residents – Increased noise, heat, and flooding risks in an already residential area.
🏞️ Historic preservation concerns – The Zabriskie-Schedler property holds deep Revolutionary War history that could be compromised.
🌊 Environmental risks – Artificial turf could affect the Saddle River ecosystem and increase runoff pollution.
Community Says: “Simply Preposterous!”
Local residents, environmental advocates, and historic preservation groups are calling the proposal “a disastrous misuse of public land” and urging the NJDEP Historic Sites Council to reject the plan.
How to Take Action
✅ Tune in to the public hearing Monday
✅ Voice your concerns to protect Ridgewood’s natural and historic heritage
✅ Learn more and get involved – Hearing info here
Why It Matters
Once these centuries-old trees are gone, they’re gone forever. Protecting the Schedler property isn’t just about saving trees—it’s about preserving New Jersey’s history, safeguarding the Saddle River, and maintaining quality of life for local families.
📢 Residents are encouraged to join the hearing and speak out against deforestation and artificial turf installation near a historic landmark.

This project makes absolutely no sense. Aside from lots of contaminated dirt they need to clean ip which will be cost prohibitive, there is nothing sane or logical about the plan to cut down hundreds of trees-Word aound town is that it is closer to 300+ and maybe actuslly all trees will come down because Ridgewood will say that the older trees don’t match the new aesthetic planting plan and so on as they normally do. Downe’s will come in and happily chopity chop them to the ground. And whatever oxygen deprived bunch of brainiacs who think putting a larger than life humongoid hot plastic artificial turf field on a highway for children to play on is a good idea, needs their heads examined and that means Mayor Vagianos, Perron, Whinograd, Weitz and Mortimer our council, who must all be complete morons along with village manager Kazmark. Wasting Ridgewood tax dollars on an unsafe and moronic plan once again because the sports leagues are their pals and possibly paid these idiots off, I would not be surprised. Just like Habernickel with healthbarn, the special favors need to stop.
I thought this project was dead ?
Wasn’t council person Winograd’s husband pushing for this very project and may have intended to start a soccer league according to Ridgewood community who play. Not sure but heard this was a strong possibility why he got involved and later why she ran for council. Soccer family so always pushing for more fields whether we actually need them or not. Nothing like a personal agenda.
Wino is an environmentalist.
She would never support the mutilation of close to 200 trees for a field no one needs or wants.
lol
lol, I am assuming this is satire. She is the one leading the charge with this.
The Bee Man and The Bond King have been awfully quiet on this subject of late.
I think they know its a lost cause.
Unless they think with all of Keith Kazmark’s political connections like Tahesha Way NJ Lt. Gov, Sherill who is running for Gov and NJDEP Commish LaTourette, that this is gonna get rubber stamped on its way up the flagpole, soaube that is why they are not saying much.
Put in low-cost housing, meet our state requirements and be done with it.
“Put in low-cost housing, meet our state requirements and be done with it.”
Zzzzz.
Get a new joke.
Zoned single family. Never happening.
It’s all fixed already.
Mayor Paul Vagianos and his puppet Keith Kazmark and a lot of political connections with Democrats include Miki Sherrill and a ton of money involved for local standards.
They are all in bed together on this.
Then maybe the thing to do is to stop talking to the council and meet with Sherrill, who is running for governor and doesn’t want bad press, taking a petition signed by many residents. Backing this terrible plan would look bad for her.
Didn’t I tell you don’t trust none of these top brass. They’re going to do whatever they want. They don’t care about you and I. They’re still looking to spend millions of dollars that supposedly they don’t have. Or unless they’re getting big donations, or are they going to float more bonds. Any end the taxpayer pay for everything. And remember this they still never reached out on the behalf of any employees that worked at these locations that had contaminated dirt. Isn’t that a shame, they don’t care. As we’re speaking with the DEP yesterday it doesn’t matter. The village will be responsible to the end. There’s no timeframe if anyone gets sick. So that’s one good thing. So just keep that in mind, employees and residence. The lawyers are scrambling. But not mine. We’re on top of it. Nice and quiet keep an eye on things.
As Brogan said, as long as you tell a resident, it’s for the good of the village they will let you do whatever we want. It will never end the waste and garbage will always continue because the voters have let it happen.. you get what you vote for.
Yeah, let’s see you gets the bid to do all the Tree work. I’m sure they’ll get there three estimates and they’ll tell a person who they want to do the work to make their bed lower than the other two, right. We all know it’s going to Downs tree service. Right, we all seen the movie over and over again. Same bullshit story. How about let somebody from the outside control the bids. There’ll be some kind of scam going on for that job. Come on you give me this job and I’ll do XYZ for you. Mr. politician hiding behind the curtain. We all know what’s going on. You’re not that smart bro. You can’t intimidate me, no one has a thumb over my head. So come over and shine my shoes.
If this goes out to bid to remove all these trees, we the .tax people need to see all the bids. And we feel that an outside party should handle that. Because there’s been too much favoritism going on with receives the contract. That’s only fair. Can you imagine how loud that’s going to be with removal of that many trees. Oh my God if I lived over there, I would sell my house before they do that. That’s going to be horrible and all the company that’s removing the contaminated soil.
do they pay the same $500 per tree permit that the residents must
To you shit heads that put thumbs down have your head up your ass.🫵🏼 you must be on drugs, the village is a bunch of scammers. Don’t trust anyone from the top.
After listening to today’s hearing it is clear that this project is dead.
Deader than dirt.
Boy does our Council look stupid.
Did Scott call in wearing his baseball uniform?
Allowing children to play within 50′ of a highway filled with 18-wheelers is simply CRAZY!! Is this Council nuts??
Back to the 2018 plan that everyone wanted until Greasy Paulie and his dutiful sidekick Spicoli pulled their bait and switch.
Minus at least $2 million dollars in taxpayer money for (self-inflicted) remediation. LOL.
Someone has to make a documentary about this.
