Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood High School (RHS) junior Francesca Gusfa has made history as the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (NJSIAA) 2025 State Champion in the 100-pound girls’ wrestling division. In recognition of her achievement, the Village of Ridgewood honored Gusfa with an official proclamation at the April 2 council meeting, presented by Mayor Paul Vagianos.
Ridgewood’s First Wrestling Champion in 65 Years
Gusfa’s victory marks a historic milestone—she is the first RHS wrestler in 65 years to win a state championship. Since arriving at RHS in Fall 2023, she has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and perseverance, even wrestling against boys in the 103-pound weight class, despite often facing a 10-pound weight disadvantage.
From Runner-Up to Champion
In 2024, Gusfa came close to victory, finishing second in the State Championship match. Determined to claim the title in 2025, she trained relentlessly, competing in tournaments across the country and internationally to sharpen her skills.
Her grit and resilience paid off in the 2025 State Championship final. Despite trailing 3-0 in the final period, Gusfa made an incredible comeback, defeating Madison Rucci from Jackson Memorial and Liberty High School with a final score of 11-5.
A Legacy of Dedication and Excellence
Gusfa’s journey is an inspiration to athletes at RHS and beyond, proving that hard work, determination, and passion lead to greatness. Her name will forever be etched in Ridgewood sports history, paving the way for future girls’ wrestling champions.
