JERSEY SHORE, NJ — Heading to the beach this weekend? Officials are warning of a high risk for rip currents along the Jersey Shore — a powerful and often underestimated ocean hazard that can quickly sweep swimmers away from shore, even in shallow water.

🌊 What Are Rip Currents?

Rip currents are fast-moving channels of water that flow from the shore out to deeper ocean waters. They can occur suddenly and pose a danger to even the strongest swimmers. With increased wave activity forecast for the weekend, the risk is significantly elevated across popular beach destinations in Asbury Park, Point Pleasant, Wildwood, and beyond.

“You’re standing waist-deep in the water, and a set of waves comes in. Suddenly, you’re not touching the bottom anymore — you’re lifted right off your feet,” explained Jon Bongiovanni, Beach Safety Supervisor for Asbury Park.

🏊‍♂️ What To Do If Caught in a Rip Current

If you find yourself being pulled out to sea:

  • Don’t panic.

  • Swim parallel to the shoreline until you are out of the current.

  • Float and conserve energy if you’re unable to swim out — the current will weaken in deeper water.

  • Call for help and wave your arms if you’re struggling.

“When the current reaches deeper water, it subsides. If you can swim, you’ll be able to make your way back to shore,” Bongiovanni said.

🚫 Beach Safety Tips

Officials and lifeguards are urging all beachgoers to follow these essential safety tips:

  • Only swim at beaches with lifeguards present.

  • Never swim at night or in unguarded areas.

  • Avoid structures like piers, jetties, and rocks — they can be extremely dangerous during rough surf conditions.

  • Always check with a lifeguard before entering the water. They can point out the safest areas to swim and alert you to hidden dangers.

“People think they can climb onto rocks to escape the current, but if the ocean is rough, it can slam you into them,” warned Bongiovanni.

📢 Final Reminder for Jersey Shore Visitors

Whether you’re spending the weekend at Seaside Heights, Long Branch, or Cape May, take the rip current risk seriously. Check local advisories, heed all posted warnings, and don’t hesitate to talk to a lifeguard before entering the water.
