Paramus NJ, A terrifying scene unfolded on Route 17 in Paramus this past Saturday night when a high-speed chase ended in a violent rollover accident, leaving a local woman hospitalized.
According to the Paramus Police Department, the incident began around 10:00 p.m. when Officer Nicholas Tanelli spotted a white Subaru WRX traveling southbound at high speeds without its headlights on. Police Chief Robert Guidetti noted that the driver was weaving recklessly through traffic, cutting off other motorists before the situation turned critical.
The Collision Near Garden State Plaza
When Officer Tanelli attempted a traffic stop, the driver of the Subaru accelerated in an effort to elude police. During the high-speed maneuver, the driver lost control and slammed into the back of a Hyundai Elantra.
The force of the impact sent the Hyundai careening off the roadway near the Garden State Plaza mall. The vehicle struck a snowbank and overturned, trapping the driver inside.

Victim Information: The driver of the Hyundai, a 22-year-old woman from Carlstadt, suffered facial injuries.
-
Rescue Efforts: Emergency responders had to extricate the woman from the wreckage.

Suspect Arrested: DUI and Eluding Charges
The driver of the Subaru, identified as Steven Gonzalez, 23, of West New York, stopped near the scene and was immediately taken into custody. Police reported that Gonzalez “exhibited signs of being under the influence” at the time of the arrest.
A 22-year-old female passenger in Gonzalez’s vehicle reported rib and hip pain but declined further medical treatment.
Gonzalez faces a litany of serious charges, including:
-
Eluding in a motor vehicle

In addition to the criminal charges, Gonzalez was issued summonses for reckless driving, improper lighting, and failure to obey traffic signals. Despite the severity of the crash, he was released on his own recognizance pending a court date.
Police Issue Safety Warning
The Paramus Police Department used this incident as a stern reminder to the public regarding road safety.
“The Paramus Police Department reminds motorists that reckless driving and impaired driving place everyone on the roadway at risk and will be enforced aggressively.”
Route 17 remains one of the busiest corridors in Bergen County, and local authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and report any erratic behavior to 911 immediately.
