Rutherford Man Charged with Arson After Hotel Fire in East Rutherford

Rutherford NJ, a Rutherford man faces multiple charges, including aggravated arson, after allegedly setting fire to a room at the Fairfield Inn in East Rutherford on Thursday, according to authorities.

Incident at Fairfield Inn

The East Rutherford Police and Fire Departments responded to a 911 call at approximately 11:24 a.m. The call reported a guest setting a fire following a dispute at the hotel, located at 850 Paterson Plank Road.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and evacuated all guests safely. Meanwhile, police and the Bergen County Regional SWAT team determined that the suspect, 55-year-old Vicente Carabello, had fled the scene.

Charges Against Carabello

Carabello faces several charges, including:

  • Aggravated arson
  • Risk of causing widespread injury and damage
  • Arson
  • Criminal mischief
  • Simple assault

Investigation Reveals Intentional Act

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Carabello intentionally set the fire following a dispute with hotel staff. The fire activated the hotel’s sprinkler system, causing property damage.

In addition to arson, Carabello allegedly assaulted a member of the hotel staff during his escape. The staffer sustained minor injuries, authorities said.

Arrest and Detention

Carabello was later located and arrested by detectives from the prosecutor’s office and the East Rutherford Police Department. He is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail, awaiting his first court appearance.

No Injuries to Guests

Thanks to the swift response of firefighters and law enforcement, all hotel guests were evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported among them.

Ongoing Investigation

The incident is under investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Task Force.
