Ridgewood NJ, the wait is over! Today marks the official start of National School Choice Week (NSCW) 2026, running from January 25–31. This is the nation’s largest annual celebration of K–12 education, and it’s all about one thing: empowering you to find the perfect learning environment where your child can thrive.
Since 2011, this movement has grown from a few local gatherings to a massive nationwide event. This year, over 28,000 schools and organizations are hosting activities to help families navigate the often-confusing world of school selection.
What is National School Choice Week?
National School Choice Week isn’t about advocating for one type of school over another. Instead, it’s a non-partisan effort to raise equal awareness for all seven types of K-12 education:
-
Traditional Public Schools: Your local neighborhood schools.
-
Public Charter Schools: Tuition-free schools with more flexibility in curriculum.
-
Public Magnet Schools: Schools with a specific focus, like STEM or the Arts.
-
Private Schools: Faith-based or independent schools (often with scholarship options).
-
Online Learning: Full-time virtual schools that offer flexibility.
-
Homeschooling: Parent-led education tailored to the child’s pace.
-
Nontraditional Learning: Including microschools and hybrid models.
Why 2026 is a Big Year for Parents
This year’s celebration comes at a “transformation moment” for education. According to a recent 2026 national survey, 62% of U.S. parents say they are likely to search for a new school this year. Whether you are looking for a safer environment, better academic support, or a specific social fit, NSCW provides the tools to start your search now—well before the summer rush.
💡 Did You Know? Across the country, 48 landmarks (including Niagara Falls and the Wrigley Building) will glow in the signature NSCW yellow and red this week to show support for educational opportunity!
How to Get Involved This Week
You don’t need to be an education expert to participate. Here is how you can join the celebration:
-
Attend a School Fair: Many cities are hosting “School Choice Fairs” where you can meet representatives from dozens of local schools in one afternoon.
-
Wear Yellow: Show your support by wearing a yellow scarf or shirt—the official color of school choice!
-
Check the “Recycle Coach” of Education: Use the National School Choice Week website to find a state-by-state roadmap of the rules and options in your specific area.
-
Social Media: Share your “School Choice Story” using the hashtag #SchoolChoiceWeek.
