💬 Local Reactions: Safety Over Convenience
Residents who were present over Memorial Day weekend described a disturbing scene:
“It was very overwhelming. There were a lot of people, a lot of fights, a lot of stabbings,” said Bayville resident Erick Iannelli. “You could see people being escorted off the boardwalk all night.”
“It’s for the protection of me and my family,” said Kelcey Rojas of South Toms River. “I wouldn’t ever want anything to happen to them.”
🏠 Crackdown on Short-Term Rentals
In addition to boardwalk restrictions, the council also discussed increasing mandatory minimum fines for violations of short-term rental regulations. Currently, fines are up to $2,000 but allow for judicial discretion. New proposals aim to raise the minimum fines to ensure greater accountability.
🗓️ What’s Next: June 18 Public Hearing
The ordinances will receive a second reading and public hearing on June 18 at 5:00 p.m. Community members are encouraged to attend and voice their opinions before the rules are officially adopted.
📌 Why It Matters
Seaside Heights is a beloved summer destination, but recent violence and disorder have jeopardized its family-friendly reputation. These new measures aim to balance public safety with responsible enjoyment of the boardwalk.
“Putting these rules in place isn’t about punishment. It’s about prevention,” one council member said during the meeting.
