His mother doted on him when he was a child and they remained close while he attended college, according to friends. They said he seemed to have everything going for him and a comfortable life — a job as a TV stagehand while he pursued a career in music, a backyard pool at his parents’ house in wealthy Ho-Ho-Kus, even Giants season tickets.

Nicholas Piotti, 24, a onetime lacrosse standout at Ridgewood High School, remained in a psychiatric hospital Tuesday, authorities said, one day after police said he beat and stabbed his mother, 63-year-old Karen, to death in their Ho-Ho-Kus home.

Police found her body inside the family’s Timberline Road home with stab wounds and “beating trauma” early Monday after responding to an aborted 911 call, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said. He said he did not know who made the call and that Karen Piotti’s husband, James, was not at home at the time of the killing, which happened after midnight Monday. Molinelli did not respond Tuesday to requests for further information.

  1. The crime seems to lean towards mental illness ie: schizophrenia with paranoid delusions?

  2. No excuses.
    Strap him into ‘old sparky’.
    Throw the switch.
It will be a good use of electricity to fry that POS.

  3. #1. How can you diagnose from a sketchy newspaper article? There were no psych facts. And like me, I bet that you are not a practicing psychiatrist.

    Too many TV crime shows.

  4. #1 to start with he’s being held in a mental hospital instead of gen pop in county. That gives credence to a mental issue of some sort, I have information other than a sketchy newspaper article and I have enough mental health training to offer a reasonable hypothesis, and you are correct I am not a psychiatrist, and lastly many crime shows are based on fact patterns from real case files. I hope this answers your question.

  5. Very sad, in any case. My thoughts and prayers for all those involved.

  6. The armchair psychiatrists are here! He is being evaluated in a psychiatric hospital and those with no information are already coming up with the diagnosis. Why do people bother going to med school? It is so easy to make it up.

You are not a psychiatrist but you play one on tv?

  7. I’m not a psychiatrist but I stayed at a holiday in last night.

  8. Sound like Dom is posting again.

  9. From reading other articles it does sound like a psychotic episode. Seems he was confused what had happened, called 911 and then noticed he was bloody so hung up, probably scared, confused and unsure what to do. I hear he had a great relationship with her. Situations like this are even more awful when your feelings on the situation don’t sit we’ll. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Piotti as he is living a nightmare.

I think it’s very uneasy people are suggesting the electric chair already not knowing the motive. Ever meet someone with bipolar, schizophrenia or some kind of psychosis who is having an “episode”? I have too often and It’s mind blowing to witness how scary the human brain can be.

Just saying, better to know facts before jumping to conclusions.

Thoughts and prayers above anything with the entire family.

  10. #9 who gives a shit about the ‘motive’.
He killed his mother, the woman who brought him into this world.
He’s a waste of air and should be off the planet.
