Should beach fees be set by counties?
TRENTON — Is it time for the counties to take control of beaches — and beach badges — away from Shore towns?
Democrats in the Legislature say yes. Their argument: If Shore towns gave up control of their beaches, it would clear the way for a regional approach to fortifying against storms. There could be a single beach badge issued by the county, good in any town, and local officials would no longer have to worry about maintaining and policing the tourist hot spots.
Bill A-3891 from Democrats was advanced Monday by the Assembly Environment Committee in a party-line vote. A Senate committee approved the bill in April. Next up are votes by the full Assembly and Senate. (Jordan/Asbury Park Press)

Democrats are always looking for a power grab beyond what is necessary. Is there currently a real problem with how each town handles fortifying their beaches? If there is a real problem, why do Dems need to have each county take over the whole thing? Why not just include a fee on the sale of every badge that gets sent to a county-wide dedicated fund (not allowed to raid it for other uses) that will be used to fortify beaches from the impact of storms? You don’t even have to raise badge prices to do this, just carve out a set dollar amount to go to the fund. Dems always try to take more power than is necessary to address the issue they hold up as the reason for needing to take action. They did the same thing with our “national crisis” of needing to get 14 million more people insurance led to Obamacare. Do you believe there was not a less costly, less power grabbing option?
I find any fee ridiculous to enter a public beach. These towns take federal money for beach replenishment, then have the balls to charge people to enter. Fortunately my family has a summer place in New England where the beaches are truly public. They aren’t ‘gaudy’ with boardwalks, the the ‘joizey’ crowd, and are much cleaner.
I agree with #2. The beaches should be free. We all pay for their maintenance. The towns fight with private property owners over control. We all pay for the Jersey Shore
And I do not go to the Jersey Shore, not even for day trips.
Sure thy should be free so all the New York’s can vacation here.
