Parsippany-Troy Hills NJ, a sinkhole has formed on Interstate 287 northbound in Parsippany-Troy Hills, causing significant traffic disruptions on Friday afternoon.
Traffic Impact & Lane Closures
As of 4:15 p.m., the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) confirmed that two left northbound lanes are closed just north of Exit 41B while officials investigate the situation.
📌 Location: I-287 North, before Route 46 and north of Interstate 80
🚧 Lane Closures: Two left lanes shut down
🕒 Current Status: Ongoing NJDOT investigation
According to an NJDOT spokesperson, the sinkhole is situated in the left shoulder of the highway, near a drain, and is currently filled with water.
Potential Cause Under Investigation
State Senator Joseph Pennacchio commented on the situation, noting that the sinkhole is believed to be related to a water pipe issue rather than ongoing concerns with Route 80 infrastructure.
“Located near a drain, the hole is full of water, so initially, it is thought to be a water pipe issue, not related to the Route 80 problems. I will feel more comfortable when the DOT confirms,” said Pennacchio.
Drivers Advised to Seek Alternate Routes
With the lane closures and ongoing investigation, motorists traveling on I-287 northbound should expect delays and consider alternate routes.
