SpaceX Makes History with First Crewed Polar Orbit Flight

SpaceX Private Mission

Ridgewood NJ, SpaceX has launched the Fram2 mission, marking a groundbreaking milestone as the first-ever crewed spaceflight to orbit Earth over its poles.

Meet the Fram2 Crew

Aboard the Crew Dragon Resilience, the four private astronauts leading this historic mission include:

  • Chun Wang – Maltese cryptocurrency entrepreneur and mission lead

  • Jannicke Mikkelsen – Norwegian filmmaker and vehicle commander

  • Rabea Rogge – German robotics engineer and pilot

  • Eric Phillips – Australian medical officer and polar explorer

A Challenging Flight Path

Unlike traditional orbits that follow the equator, this mission flies in a polar orbit, passing directly over both the North and South Poles. This trajectory presents unique challenges, including higher energy demands and complex recovery logistics.

Scientific Goals: What’s Happening in Space?

During their three- to five-day mission, the crew will conduct 22 groundbreaking experiments, such as:
X-ray imaging in space
Studying microgravity’s impact on human health
Testing the possibility of growing mushrooms in space

Upon landing, the astronauts will also test their ability to reacclimate to gravity without medical or mobility assistance—a crucial step for long-term space exploration.

Honoring Polar Exploration History

The Fram2 mission is named after the Fram, a legendary Norwegian ship used for polar expeditions in the late 19th century. Fram is a ship that was used in expeditions of the Arctic and Antarctic regions by the Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup, Oscar Wisting, and Roald Amundsen between 1893 and 1912. It was designed and built by the Scottish-Norwegian shipwright Colin Archer for Fridtjof Nansen’s 1893 Arctic expedition in which the plan was to freeze Fram into the Arctic ice sheet and float with it over the North Pole. Fram is preserved as a museum ship at the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway.
