Cliffside Park NJ, a tense, five-hour standoff in Cliffside Park concluded late Friday evening, November 28th, after the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team deployed tear gas to take an armed man into custody. The suspect, identified as Oliver Checo, was wanted in connection with an unprovoked knife attack on a store owner in neighboring Fairview just hours earlier.

The dramatic situation, which unfolded on Walker Street, required a massive multi-agency response and marked the second time Checo has been involved in a prolonged standoff in Bergen County.

Unprovoked Attack Ignites Chaos

The incident began around 3:30 p.m. on Anderson Avenue in Fairview. According to Deputy Fairview Police Chief John Pierrotti, Checo confronted a store owner without provocation, “talking gibberish” before physically striking the victim several times.

The store owner initially walked away, but when Checo returned for a second attack, he produced a switchblade and “took a swipe” at the victim.

A quick-thinking witness flagged down a passing police officer, who followed the victim’s trail to Checo’s residence at 257 Walker St. in Cliffside Park.

Five Hours of Negotiation and Tear Gas

Upon locating Checo inside his locked apartment, the situation immediately escalated. The suspect began screaming threats at the officers: “If you come and get me, you’ll have to shoot me,” Pierrotti relayed.

The threat quickly prompted a major law enforcement mobilization involving the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team, specialized crisis negotiators, and officers from both the Fairview and Cliffside Park Police Departments.

To end the tense five-hour barricade safely, SWAT officers deployed approximately a dozen cans of tear gas through the apartment window. Checo finally emerged around 8:30 p.m., still brandishing a knife, but was quickly subdued by SWAT officers and taken into custody.

Checo was transported to New Bridge Medical Center for evaluation and is expected to face multiple criminal charges. Authorities noted that this incident echoes a 12-hour standoff involving Checo in Guttenberg just last December.
