Police and fire officials were called in around 7:45 a.m. to the larger than life supermarket in the Paramus Park mall on a report of a carbon dioxide leak.
In an email Paramus Police Chief Kenneth R. Ehrenberg said, “All store employees were quickly evacuated, and the store had not yet opened for customers,”
“Five employees were checked out by Paramus EMS and were released at the scene,” Chief Ehrenberg said.
Three other workers had evacuated onto the roof of the building and were helped down with Paramus firefighters using a ladder truck, Ehrenberg said.
Chief Ehrenberg said service company workers were conducting maintenance when the refrigeration pipe broke.“The leak was shut down and the store was ventilated to clear out the gas,”
