That’s right, spam isn’t just annoying… It’s a major pollutant. In fact, spam emails are responsible for 29.7 million metric tons of CO2e emissions each year!

Other Interesting Data

  • The amount of annual emissions caused by total spam sent worldwide is equivalent to the electricity it takes to power 5,773,903 homes for a year.
  • Spam email is responsible for more annual emissions than entire countries: Denmark (25.71 mil metric tons), Dominican Republic (29.09 million tons), Syria (25.57 million tons), Cuba (22.94 million tons), Lebanon (26.77 million tons), Croatia (17.7 million tons), and many other countries.
  • Around 271 billion spam emails were sent every day last year. Spam makes up 84% of all email sent.
  • The United States is the number one offender, responsible for 890,489 metric tons of Co2e emissions from all the spam we send. The US is followed by Germany, Austria, China, France, UK, Poland, Russia, Brazil, and Netherlands.
You can view the report here: https://todaytesting.com/environmental-impact-spam/
The report includes a chart comparing countries, images comparing carbon emissions from spam to other polluting offenders, and an infographic showing how you can reduce your email-related carbon footprint.
