Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood High School recently hosted Super Science Saturday, an annual hands-on learning event that brought science students and families from across the tri-state area together for a day filled with experiments, demonstrations, and interactive exhibits.
A Unique Learning Experience for All Ages
The event, running from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., kicked off with a special sensory-friendly hour in collaboration with the Special Education Parent Advisory Group (SEPAG). This segment featured quieter, sensory-friendly experiments and a captivating “Science Circus” presentation by the Liberty Science Center.
Exciting Science Exhibits & Hands-On Demonstrations
Super Science Saturday featured contributions from local and regional organizations, including:
- Ridgewood Free Public Library
- Green Ridgewood
- Ridgewood Recycling & Ridgewood Water
- Ridgewood Police, Fire, and Volunteer Ambulance Corps
Popular Attractions & Student-Led Experiments
Students from Ridgewood High School’s Asian Cultures Club, HOSA-Future Health Professionals, Applied Engineering Club, and Robotics Club encouraged young attendees to explore STEM fields. Among the event’s biggest highlights:
- RHS Battle-Bots: A thrilling robotics competition.
- The Egg Drop Challenge: A crowd-favorite test of physics and engineering.
- Groundwater Filtration Demonstration: Ridgewood Water showcased how rock, sand, and gravel naturally filter groundwater.
Engaging with Nature & Wildlife
Organizations like the Bergen County Zoo and New Jersey Audubon Society provided hands-on experiences with animal shells, antlers, and fur. The Hackensack Riverkeeper even set up a live fish tank to educate visitors on the dangers of non-point source pollution and how they can help protect local waterways.
Cutting-Edge Science & Outdoor Activities
Bergen Community College (BCC) took advantage of the beautiful weather to host:
- Solar Hot Dog Cookers & Solar Telescopes
- Electric Go-Kart Demonstrations
- Hydroponics & Robotics Exhibits
- Live Rocket Launch by The Rocket Guy
Inside, the cafeteria transformed into a Rainforest Café, where families could grab refreshments and explore exhibits, including a video game and robotics workshop by Little Ivy Academy.
A Legacy of Science Education in Ridgewood
Super Science Saturday, founded in 1989 by Ridgewood science teacher Jim Wallace, has grown into a premier STEM event sponsored by the Ridgewood Education Foundation and Valley Hospital Foundation.
Ridgewood Village Manager Keith Kazmark celebrated the event’s success in a Facebook post, highlighting how science shapes everyday life in Ridgewood—from water treatment and recycling to public safety and environmental conservation.
