The New Milford Volunteer Fire Department was called into action on Monday evening, 10/27/2025, to combat a suspicious brush fire. Just before 8:30 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the wooded area located behind the local swim club for reports of a possible blaze.

The incident was quickly confirmed by the New Milford Police, who notified Chief 30 of the active brush fire while units were en route. Thanks to the fast response of the volunteer crews, the situation was contained quickly and safely.

Firefighters Spring into Action

The successful operation saw a coordinated effort between the responding fire companies:

  • Engine 33 was the first unit on the scene. Its crew quickly stretched a hose line into the wooded trail and began the critical work of extinguishing the fire.
  • Engine 32‘s crew took a crucial defensive role, checking the surrounding area to ensure that no flying embers had ignited secondary fires in the dry brush. They then joined Engine 33’s crew to assist with the final knockdown.

Fortunately, the fire was confined to one area of the woods, preventing it from spreading into the nearby residential areas or the swim club property. Crews operated on the scene for approximately 45 minutes to fully extinguish the blaze and conduct a final safety check.

Why Is This Fire “Suspicious”?

While the fire was brought under control with no injuries or significant property damage, brush fires in wooded areas, particularly near residential and recreational facilities, are often treated as suspicious—especially when there are no natural causes like lightning or extreme heat to blame.

The New Milford Police Department and Fire officials will likely investigate the origin and cause of the blaze to determine if it was accidental, related to illegal activity (like unattended campfires or careless disposal of smoking materials), or intentionally set.

Community vigilance remains key to preventing these dangerous incidents. If you have any information regarding activity in the woods behind the swim club on the evening of October 27th, please contact the New Milford Police Department.
