Lodi NJ, Continuing a 72-year tradition, the Bergen County American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary are again hosting the annual George F. Axt Memorial Fund nurses scholarship dinner on Friday, September 20, 2024, at Joseph M. Lane American Legion Post 136 in Lodi. Individual tickets are $20 each, and sponsorship opportunities are available.
This year, the organization will honor the combat nursing service of Leonia American Legion Commander Dennis Castro, NC, BSN, RN, MICN, who also serves as Commander of Sergeant Clendenon S. Newell American Legion Post 1 in Leonia. Lieutenant Colonel Castro is assigned as Chief Nurse Executive of the 514th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, 514th Operations Group, 514th Air Mobility Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. He is the senior nursing executive, Officer-In-Charge of Nursing Services, directly advising the Squadron Commander of relevant nursing issues and is responsible for a 130-person Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. In civilian life, Lieutenant Colonel Castro is Director of the Mobile Intensive Care Unit at Paterson’s St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, and a Specialty Care Transport Supervisor of the Mobile Intensive Care Unit at Englewood Hospital.
With 100 percent of the profits from the 2023 dinner going to scholarship recipients, six $3,000 scholarships to nursing students in May 2024.
