Ridgewood NJ, Commuters on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) are preparing for a historic shift in regional rail travel. Starting February 15, 2026, Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT will begin the “cutover” process—a massive engineering operation to transfer rail traffic from the 110-year-old Portal Bridge to the brand-new Portal North Bridge.

While this milestone promises a future of increased reliability and capacity, the transition will trigger significant service modifications through mid-March 2026.

The “Portal Cutover”: What’s Happening?

The cutover is the final, critical step in activating the new bridge over the Hackensack River. This complex process involves:

  • Deactivating over a century of legacy infrastructure.

  • Reconfiguring active track alignments to the new span.

  • Integrating advanced signaling, power, and communication systems.

  • Testing safety interlockings to ensure the new bridge is ready for full-speed service.

Because work requires single-tracking between Newark and Secaucus, there will be fewer trains operating into Penn Station New York (PSNY) on weekdays.

Major Impact: Midtown Direct Diverted to Hoboken

The most significant change affects Midtown Direct customers on the Morristown Line, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton Line.

  • Weekdays (Feb 17 – March 14): All Midtown Direct service into PSNY is canceled. These trains will be diverted to Hoboken Terminal.

  • Weekends: Midtown Direct service to PSNY will continue, but customers must use special schedules and may face longer travel times.

Commuter Survival Guide: Tips for February & March

NJ TRANSIT is urging customers to adjust their routines during this high-impact construction window.

1. Work from Home

If you have the ability to telecommute, NJ TRANSIT recommends working from home as much as possible to avoid peak-hour crowding.

2. Travel During “Off-Peak” Windows

For those who must commute, riding outside of these windows is highly recommended to avoid the worst congestion:

  • Mornings: Before 7:00 AM or after 9:00 AM.

  • Evenings: Before 4:00 PM or after 7:00 PM.

3. Take Advantage of Cross-Honoring

To help diverted passengers, NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes will be cross-honored on the following services:

  • PATH (between Hoboken and 33rd St. stations).

  • NY Waterway Ferry (between Hoboken and Midtown/W. 39th St.).

  • NJ TRANSIT Bus Service (specifically the 126 bus and regional routes).

Important Timeline & Dates

  • Sunday, Feb 15: New temporary schedules go into effect.

  • Monday, Feb 16 (Presidents’ Day): Rail operates on a modified weekend schedule.

  • Tuesday, Feb 17: Weekday diversions to Hoboken begin for Midtown Direct.

  • Sunday, March 15: Regular service is expected to resume, pending successful safety testing.

Save Money on Your Commute

Diverted customers can actually save money during this period. By purchasing tickets to/from Hoboken instead of PSNY and using the PATH or Ferry, riders can realize a savings of up to 25% per trip. Additionally, a special FLEXPASS (20-trip ticket with a 15% discount) goes on sale February 15.
