NJ TRANSIT Restoration: What to Expect for Tuesday, February 24, 2026
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, After a historic winter storm blanketed the state in over two feet of snow, New Jersey is finally digging out. NJ TRANSIT has announced a phased restoration of services for Tuesday, February 24, but your typical weekday commute will look a little different.
Due to a combination of ongoing Portal Bridge Cutover construction and snow-clearing operations, most rail lines are operating on a Presidents’ Day Schedule. Here is your complete breakdown of the service restoration.
Rail Service: The Major Changes
Most rail lines are resuming service with significant modifications. Note: If you see “Ghost Trains” (empty rail cars) moving through your town, they are being used to keep the overhead wires and tracks clear of ice.
1. The Hoboken Diversion (Portal Cutover)
As part of the month-long Portal North Bridge Cutover project, all Midtown Direct service to New York Penn Station is currently diverted to Hoboken Terminal.
-
Impacted Lines: Morristown, Gladstone, and Montclair-Boonton.
-
Alternative Options: Cross-honoring is in effect at Hoboken Terminal for:
-
PATH trains to 33rd Street.
-
NY Waterway Ferry to Midtown/West 39th Street.
-
NJ TRANSIT 126 Bus to Port Authority.
-
2. Holiday Schedule (Presidents’ Day Style)
The following lines will operate on a Presidents’ Day schedule for Tuesday:
-
Northeast Corridor (NEC): Note that trains will run express from Metropark to Newark Penn; local stops between these stations are currently bypassed as Amtrak clears snow from track switches.
-
North Jersey Coast Line: Long Branch to New York service is back; Bay Head service has also resumed.
-
Raritan Valley & Main-Bergen/Port Jervis Lines: Operating on the holiday schedule.
-
Pascack Valley Line: Operating on the holiday schedule.
3. Suspended & Regular Service
-
Princeton Dinky: Service remains suspended due to overhead wire issues.
-
Atlantic City Rail Line: This is the only line operating on a regular weekday schedule.
Bus, Light Rail, and Access Link
-
Bus & Light Rail: Regular weekday service resumes at the start of the service day on Tuesday. However, expect residual delays and detours based on local roadway conditions and ongoing snow removal.
-
Access Link: Service is scheduled to resume at 2:00 PM on Tuesday.
Commuter Safety Checklist
-
Check Your App: Schedules are fluid. Download the NJ TRANSIT App for real-time “My Transit” alerts.
-
Portal Bridge Context: Remember, the “Portal Cutover” is a 4-week high-intensity project to transition rail to the new Portal North Bridge. This work continues through March 15, 2026.
-
Stay Off the Tracks: Never cross railroad gates when they are down. Equipment and “ice-clearing” trains may move at any time, even when regular service is light.
