Englewood, NJ – The Elisabeth Morrow School (EMS) is proud to announce its selection as a recipient of the 2025 National Blue Ribbon School award, placing it among the nation’s most academically distinguished institutions. After successfully completing the rigorous federal application process, the school was officially notified of its selection by the U.S. Department of Education. Notably, EMS is one of only two private schools in the state of New Jersey to receive this prestigious recognition, cementing its place as a leader in independent education.

This recognition affirms the school’s commitment to a child-centered, innovative approach to education and provides triple-layered validation of the exceptional quality of an EMS education.
“New Jersey’s 2025 Blue Ribbon Schools demonstrate what is possible when educators, students, and communities work together to support academic growth and opportunity for all learners,” said Education Commissioner Kevin Dehmer. “The Blue Ribbon distinction honors schools that stand out — whether through consistently high achievement or by making remarkable strides in closing opportunity gaps. We are proud to continue recognizing schools that strengthen how they serve all students and set a standard for success across our state.”

Selection Affirmed by CAPE and State Honor

The school’s sustained commitment to academic excellence has been publicly affirmed by both the Council for American Private Education and the State of New Jersey, reinforcing its national selection status.

CAPE Recognition: The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) officially named The Elisabeth Morrow School a 2025 CAPE Blue Ribbon School on October 15, honoring the school in the Exemplary High-Performing category. EMS was one of only 55 schools nationwide recognized by CAPE. This independent recognition validates the school’s high achievement.

New Jersey State Honor: EMS was formally honored yesterday, Nov. 5, as a New Jersey Blue Ribbon School by the State Board of Education at its meeting in Trenton. Marek Beck, Ph.D., Head of School, officially accepted the resolution on behalf of the school. The ceremony included the reading of a resolution recognizing the school’s consistently high performance, validating the quality of its educational model.

“This triple validation — from the U.S. Department of Education, CAPE, and the New Jersey State Board — doesn’t just affirm our status; it establishes The Elisabeth Morrow School at the absolute highest echelon of private education,” said Dr. Beck. “This achievement serves as powerful validation of our faculty’s hard work and the undeniable success of our educational model, which balances high academic rigor using a child-centered approach that fosters deep engagement.”

“For trustees, this achievement showcases the impact of our strategic investment in faculty development, innovative programs, and evidence-based curriculum,” said Elizabeth Gabbay, President of the EMS Board of Trustees. “Being recognized with National Blue Ribbon status is a testament to the dedication and excellence that our educators bring every day and to the remarkable outcomes our students are achieving.”

“The National Blue Ribbon School award represents a high standard of excellence, and we are proud to see an NJAIS member school achieve this significant distinction. It highlights the continued commitment to quality and innovation found within New Jersey’s independent school sector,” said Kevin J. Ruth, Ph.D., Executive Director of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools.

“So proud of The Elisabeth Morrow School… This award reflects their hard work and the tremendous esteem with which they are held by all of us at City Hall. Their trademark for excellence is recognized by our City Leadership and a generation of parents who have seen their children succeed. We celebrate this achievement and our ongoing collaboration as we continue to be inspired by their staff, educators, and leaders,” said Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes.

The achievement underscores the school’s consistently high performance, validating its intentional and interconnected approach to learning — from evidence-based early literacy instruction to advanced middle school programs.

Since 1930, The Elisabeth Morrow School has shown exceptional dedication to educating children to be thinkers and leaders. Its founders, Elisabeth Morrow and Connie Chilton, were trailblazers who believed that young children deserved to have a rigorous education from the earliest ages. Today, in the school’s 95th year of inspiring young minds to embrace the joys of learning, EMS continues to be an innovator in educating children through the entire arc of childhood.

The Elisabeth Morrow School (EMS), founded in 1930, is a leading independent, co-educational day school in Englewood, New Jersey, serving students from age 2 through eighth grade.EMS is a nationally recognized institution, distinguished by a wealth of top-tier honors: it was selected for the 2025 National Blue Ribbon School award — a distinction received by only one other private school in New Jersey, forming a triple validation of excellence reinforced by CAPE Blue Ribbon School and New Jersey Blue Ribbon School recognition.
