Is Voter ID Really “Despicable”? The Data Behind the SAVE Act and the Fight for Election Integrity

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The “debate” over election security has reached a boiling point as the Senate prepares to vote on the SAVE America Act. This legislation, which would require both photo identification to vote in federal elections and proof of citizenship to register, has split Washington down the middle, but is remaims overwhemingly favorable with voters .

While critics label these requirements as “voter suppression,” proponents argue that the data tells a different story about how accessible identification actually is for the American public.

Gallup published a poll in October 2022 finding 79% of voters support voter ID laws, including 97% of Republicans, 84% of Independents, and 53% of Democrats.Even more recient CNN’s Harry Enten poll showed 83% Favor Voter ID, proving it’s Not Controversial.

Breaking Down the Data: Who Actually Lacks ID?

A common argument against stricter ID laws is that they disenfranchise specific groups, such as college students or those who have recently changed their names. However, data compiled from sources including YouGov, Pew Research, the Brennan Center, and the Cato Institute suggests the “identification gap” is smaller than often portrayed:

  • 89% of Americans (18+): Possess readily available proof of citizenship.

  • 9% of Americans: Have the documents, though they may not be immediately at hand (e.g., students keeping documents at their parents’ home).

  • 2% of Americans: Lack documentation entirely.

Interestingly, this 2% is concentrated primarily among those aged 18–24 in rural areas and the very elderly. For the younger demographic, this is often a temporary state that changes as they enter the workforce or seek higher education.

The “Common Sense” Argument for Voter ID

If photo ID is a “despicable” burden for voting, why is it a standard requirement for almost every other facet of modern life? Supporters of the SAVE Act point out that valid identification is already mandatory for:

  • Travel: Boarding a commercial flight.

  • Finances: Opening a bank account or applying for a mortgage.

  • Healthcare: Picking up certain prescriptions or checking into a hospital.

  • Employment: Completing I-9 forms for a new job.

  • Age-Restricted Goods: Purchasing alcohol or tobacco.

6 Ways Voter ID Strengthens Elections

According to the Good American Citizen Project and other integrity advocates, formalizing ID requirements provides several key benefits:

  1. Identity Verification: Drastically reduces the risk of in-person impersonation.

  2. Prevents Double Voting: Ensures one person, one vote across state lines.

  3. Boosts Public Confidence: Increases trust in the legitimacy of the final tally.

  4. Reduces Fraud Reports: States with existing ID laws often report fewer instances of investigated fraud.

  5. Streamlines Polling: Clear ID processes reduce errors and wait times at the booth.

  6. Standardization: Aligns voting with the security measures used in other high-stakes public systems.

The Political Standoff: Schumer vs. The SAVE Act

Despite these arguments, the political divide is stark. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has slammed the SAVE Act, calling it “one of the most despicable pieces of legislation” in his career.

The core of the disagreement lies in the definition of “access.” While the Right views the act as a necessary gatekeeper for citizenship-only voting, the Left argues that even a 2% documentation gap is too high a price to pay for election security.

Conclusion

As the Senate vote looms, the question remains: Is the SAVE Act a common-sense security measure or an unnecessary barrier? With nearly 90% of the population already holding the necessary papers, the “Jim Crow” comparisons are facing more scrutiny than ever before.

  1. the only reason to object is if you plan to cheat

  2. Your comment above is not completely accurate. In 19 states and DC you can get a driver license, without need to prove citizenship. With a valid driver license you can:
Board a commercial flight; Open a bank account or apply for a mortgage; Pick up certain prescriptions or check into a hospital; complete I-9 forms for a new job; and Purchase alcohol or tobacco.

    1. Illegal aliens can ‘get’ a license is the scam leading to the motor-voter act . So relying upon a liar to check the accurate box when asked on a drivers license to ‘have this register to vote” is a fools game.
We already have an invasion of foreigners who refuse to assimilate and when they vote (illegal no citizens) you get Minneapolis. The ‘learing center’ is the tip of the iceberg.
