The Hermitage: Today 1-4 p.m.Civil War Winter Encampment

January 15-16, 2011, 1-4 p.m.Civil War Winter Encampment

The members of Company B, 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers, will stage a special winter encampment on the grounds of the Hermitage National Historic Landmark on the weekend of January 15-16, 2011, the museum’s public hours (1-4 p.m.). The Civil War re-enactor group, based in Clifton, New Jersey, also hosts an encampment at The Hermitage in May. The unit will set up the outdoor Winter Encampment regardless of the presence of snow. In fact, they are hoping for snow to add to the realism of their living history portrayal of the hardships encountered by soldiers during the Civil War. On display will be tents in which soldiers endured the harsh elements, as well as other displays of wintertime provisions. In addition, there will be indoor displays of Civil War artifacts, as well as engaging hands-on activities for families with children to learn more about this important era in American history.

Entry to the Winter Encampment is included with regular admission to the museum: $7 for adults; $5 for seniors; and $4 for children. Museum members and chilren under 6 are admitted free. Hours are 1-4 p.m. both days.
