Costco Proposal Resumes in Paramus, Addressing Traffic and Resident Concerns

Paramus NJ, After an eight-month delay, the debate over a proposed Costco in Paramus has officially resumed. The Planning Board held a hearing last week to review the updated plans for the massive 184,000-square-foot project on Route 17, which aims to replace a vacant Stop & Shop, Kmart, and a retail strip mall.

The hearing included new details on how the company plans to address key concerns, particularly for nearby residents and the potential impact on traffic.

New Changes and What’s Next

The latest proposal from Costco includes several key changes:

  • Expanded Parking: The expected ground-level parking has been increased from 423 to 445 spaces. The plan still includes 390 rooftop parking spaces on the building.
  • Improved Buffer: To better shield homes on Wynetta Place, the developer will move a proposed 8-foot-tall black vinyl chain-link fence higher up on the slope, creating a taller buffer.
  • New Highway Access: The plan now includes an easement with a neighboring car rental lot, which would allow for a new exit lane directly onto Route 17.

The hearing featured testimony from the project engineer, Michelle Carlson, and the company’s traffic expert, Nicholas Verderese. At the next meeting on October 2, residents will have a chance to directly ask Verderese questions about the project’s potential traffic impacts.

If approved, the new location would be the 22nd Costco in New Jersey and the third in Bergen County, joining existing stores in Hackensack and Teterboro.

    2. This was addressed at the planning board meeting tonight. All sorts of excuses. What a waste. Residents’ concerns basically fell on deaf ears.

      1. Well, it’s a done deal. We can thank the Paramus planning board for the future traffic nightmares Paramus and Ridgewood properties adjacent to the site will endure. Time to vote some people out of office.

This is a spectacular development for the growing Paramus-Ridgewood corridor. It will bring thousands of new people from NYC and Rockland County to our area every single day!

Hopefully they find the way to our thriving downtown and continue their shopping and fine dining in the 07450!
