Portal North Bridge Cutover: A Critical Milestone for the Gateway Program
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridge3wood NJ, New Jersey commuters, take note: the long-awaited “Portal North Bridge” is entering its final stretch. Amtrak has begun a complex “cutover” process to transfer rail operations from the century-old, notoriously unreliable Portal Bridge to the brand-new, high-level span over the Hackensack River.
While this project is a massive win for the future of the Northeast Corridor (NEC), the transition requires significant weekday service changes through mid-March.

The Timeline: Mark Your Calendars
-
February 15: New temporary NJ TRANSIT schedules officially took effect.
-
March 14: Scheduled completion of the Amtrak cutover work.
-
March 15: Regular NJ TRANSIT schedules are expected to resume (pending safety testing).
How Your Commute is Impacted
To allow for the transfer of track alignments and signaling systems, trains are restricted to a single track between Newark and Secaucus. This creates a “bottleneck” that necessitates the following changes on weekdays:
-
Midtown Direct Service Suspended: There is no Midtown Direct service into Penn Station New York on the Morristown Line, Gladstone Branch, or Montclair-Boonton Line.
-
Diversions to Hoboken: All weekday Midtown Direct trains are being diverted to Hoboken Terminal.
-
Reduced Capacity: The Northeast Corridor (NEC) and North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) are running fewer trains into New York.
-
Cross-Honoring in Effect: NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes are being cross-honored on the PATH (at Hoboken/33rd St only), NY Waterway ferries (to/from Midtown), and the 126 Bus.
Pro-Commuter Tip: If you can work from home, now is the time to do it. If you must travel, aim to ride before 7:00 AM or after 9:00 AM to avoid the heaviest crowding.
Why This Work Matters
The original Portal Bridge is over 110 years old. As a “swing bridge,” it often gets stuck in the open position, causing cascading delays for thousands of riders. The new Portal North Bridge is a fixed span that sits 50 feet above the water—high enough for marine traffic to pass under without ever stopping a train.
Key elements of this “Cutover” include:
-
Deactivating 110-year-old legacy infrastructure.
-
Activating 4,500 linear feet of new track.
-
Integrating state-of-the-art signaling and power systems.
-
Testing two new massive interlockings for safety.
