Ridgewood NJ, The community of Ridgewood and the medical world of New Jersey are mourning a visionary leader. Dr. Anne Catherine Robinson, a trailblazing Bergen County pediatrician who dedicated over a decade to improving the mental and physical health of adolescents, passed away this Monday at the age of 66.

While many knew her as a compassionate doctor at Valley Pediatrics, Dr. Robinson’s legacy is etched into the very schedule of the New Jersey school system. She was the driving force behind the historic shift to later school start times, proving that a mother’s intuition and a doctor’s expertise can change public policy.

A Life of Firsts: From Ridgewood High to Baylor Medicine

Dr. Robinson’s roots ran deep in Ridgewood. An alumna of Willard Elementary, George Washington Middle, and Ridgewood High School, she returned to her hometown to serve the community that raised her.

Her academic journey was one of breaking barriers:

  • Wesleyan University Alumna: Excelled in her undergraduate studies.

  • Medical Pioneer: She was one of only a few women in her graduating class at Baylor College of Medicine, a testament to her tenacity in a then male-dominated field.

The 12-Year Battle for “A Healthy Balance”

Most people recognize that teenagers are tired, but Dr. Robinson understood the clinical science behind adolescent sleep deprivation. As a key member of the NJ American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Adolescent Sleep & School Start Time, she turned her clinical knowledge into a local crusade.

In early 2021, alongside Principal Jeff Nyhuis, she presented the transformative “Finding a Healthy Balance” proposal to the Ridgewood Board of Education. It wasn’t an overnight victory; it was the culmination of 12 years of research, advocacy, and community outreach.

The Impact: In September 2023, Ridgewood High School officially moved its start time from 7:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m., providing students with the critical sleep needed for brain development and mental health.

A Legacy of Service Beyond the Exam Room

Dr. Robinson’s compassion wasn’t limited to school schedules. Her volunteer work reached those most in need:

  • Raphael’s Life House: She provided guidance and support for young, pregnant women in crisis.

  • Community Mentor: Ridgewood alumni remember her as a student who “was going places,” and she spent her life ensuring the next generation had the health and resources to do the same.

Why Her Mission Matters for the Future of NJ Schools

Dr. Robinson’s work has sparked a statewide conversation. As more New Jersey districts consider the health benefits of later start times, they look to the “Ridgewood Model” she helped build. Her passing is a reminder of the power of local advocacy—one extra hour of sleep can mean a lifetime of better health for a student.
