Montclair, NJ- The “Voice of the Yankees” is proving he’s as resilient as a ninth-inning rally. Legendary broadcaster John Sterling, who famously retired in April 2024 after a staggering 64-year career, recently shared an encouraging update regarding his health. After suffering a heart attack in early January, the 87-year-old icon called into WFAN this past Sunday to reassure fans that he is on the mend.
“The Force in My Legs”
While Sterling’s trademark booming voice remains intact, he admitted the recovery process has its hurdles. While his heart is reportedly in good shape, the health scare has impacted his mobility.
“I’m kind of waiting for the force to leave my legs and I can get back out there,” Sterling remarked. “I’m very fortunate, and all things are good.”
A Lifelong Fan, Even from the Sidelines
Sterling’s retirement followed a historic run of 5,631 Yankees games. Even while recovering in bed, his passion for the game hasn’t dimmed. He shared that he has been passing the time immersed in the Winter Olympics, basketball, and the start of MLB Spring Training.
“I’ve always felt blessed by the fact, since I’ve been a little boy, that I’m a sports fan,” he said, proving that even a heart attack can’t keep him from the box scores.
The Team Behind the Legend
Beyond the doctors, Sterling credited his recovery to his “starting lineup”: his four children, Abigail and triplets Bradford, Derek, and Veronica.
“I couldn’t have done anything without them,” Sterling said emotionally. “They have been sensational in taking care of me.”
As the 2026 MLB season approaches, the baseball world continues to pull for the man who gave us “The Yankees win! Theeeeeee Yankees win!”
