Davos Switzerland , The “Arctic Standoff” has officially thawed. In a high-stakes pivot at the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Donald Trump announced a major framework agreement with NATO that secures “total access” to Greenland—sending global markets into a celebratory rally.

The deal effectively ends the threat of a trade war with Europe, as Trump immediately withdrew the 10% tariffs (scheduled for February 1) on eight European nations, including Denmark, Germany, and the UK.

The “No-Cost” Access Framework

In an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo, President Trump revealed that the US is negotiating a deal for indefinite military and strategic access to Greenland with no direct payment required.

“We’re getting everything we want at no cost… we’re going to have total access to Greenland,” Trump stated.

Key pillars of the emerging deal include:

  • Arctic Security: Bolstering defenses against Russian and Chinese influence in the High North.

  • The “Golden Dome”: Greenland will play a vital role in the US-led multilayered missile defense shield, designed to intercept hypersonic and ballistic threats.

  • NATO Cooperation: Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed a new “Arctic Sentry” partnership to monitor the region collectively.

Market Reaction: A 600-Point Relief Rally

Wall Street, which had suffered its worst day of the year just 24 hours prior, roared back on the news. The Dow Jones jumped nearly 600 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both surged over 1%.

Investors were particularly relieved by the removal of the “Greenland Tariffs,” which threatened to stack on top of existing duties and cripple the European automotive and tech sectors.

Sovereignty vs. Strategy

While Trump touted the deal as a path to “ultimate security,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen maintained a firm line: Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland is non-negotiable. The framework appears to be a compromise—granting the US the de facto control and military footprint it demands without a formal change of ownership.
