Rochelle Park NJ, The busy stretch of Route 17 in Bergen County became a scene of gridlock Wednesday morning after a water main break was discovered in the early hours.
-
Location: Route 17 Southbound, near the border of Maywood and Rochelle Park, just south of Central Avenue.
-
Discovery Time: Approximately 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3rd.
-
Impact: Rochelle Park Police confirmed the break occurred near Becker Avenue. As of 8:30 a.m., traffic was severely restricted.
Rochelle Park Police Update: “At this time there is only 1 lane of travel southbound from Marinus Street to Becker Ave. We will update once the highway is fully open again.”
With the right lane and shoulder completely closed, traffic is funneling into a single lane, causing massive delays for commuters traveling through the area.
Repair Crews on Scene: Expect Hours of Delays
Veolia Water crews were quickly dispatched and are currently working diligently on the scene to repair the damage.
Captain James DePreta of the Rochelle Park Police Department indicated that the repairs are extensive and are expected to take the next several hours. The cause of the water main break remains unknown at this time.
Key Traffic Advisory (As of 8:18 a.m.):
-
Closed Lanes: Right Lane and Shoulder on Route 17 South.
-
Affected Area: Marinus Street to Becker Avenue.
-
Action Needed: Commuters should seek alternate routes immediately and plan for significant added travel time.
Why Water Main Breaks Cause Such Havoc
Water main breaks, especially on a major artery like Route 17 (a corridor famously known for its crowded holiday traffic), are incredibly disruptive:
-
Safety Hazard: The sudden release of water can flood the roadway, leading to dangerous icy conditions (especially in cold weather) and pavement erosion.
-
Structural Damage: The force of the break can lift and damage the asphalt, necessitating lengthy, complex road repairs after the pipe is fixed.
-
Traffic Nightmare: Closing lanes on a multi-lane highway during rush hour instantly creates a bottleneck that affects thousands of drivers.
Stay Updated and Plan Your Commute
If your drive takes you through the Maywood/Rochelle Park area of Route 17, your best bet is to avoid the route entirely for the majority of the morning.
-
Check Resources: Continuously monitor traffic conditions via 511nj.org and local police social media pages for real-time updates on when the highway is fully reopened.
-
Alternative Routes: Consider using nearby parallel roads, though be aware that side streets will likely be heavily congested.
We will provide an update as soon as the Rochelle Park Police or Veolia Water announce the completion of repairs and the full re-opening of Route 17 South.
