OAKLAND, NJ — A heartbreaking tragedy struck Ramapo Lake on July 26, as a 14-year-old boy died in a suspected drowning, officials confirmed.
According to Caryn Shinske, senior press officer for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, emergency crews launched a water search after reports of a missing swimmer. The teen’s body was recovered around 1 p.m. and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was turned over to the Northeast Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, which will determine the official cause of death.
About Ramapo Lake
Ramapo Lake spans 120 acres and is located in Oakland, stretching across the border into Wanaque, Passaic County. The lake is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, and kayaking—but like all natural bodies of water, it carries risks for swimmers.
Community in Mourning
This tragedy comes just days after another devastating incident in Oakland, where a 4-year-old child was struck and killed by a car.
The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department urged the community to support the first responders, posting on social media:
“Please keep our volunteer first responders in your prayers.”
The Ponds Reformed Church in Oakland opened its doors to provide comfort and grief support for anyone affected.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young teen who lost their life at Ramapo Lake this morning,” the church posted on Facebook. “We again recognize the selfless care of our first responders, who faced another difficult circumstance in less than 48 hours. We offer prayers of support and thanks to each of them as well.”

The New Jersey State Park Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from multiple agencies, including:
-
Wanaque Police Department
-

-

Their coordinated efforts ensured a swift recovery operation despite the heartbreaking outcome.
Water Safety Reminder
This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of water safety, especially in lakes, rivers, and other natural settings without lifeguards. Authorities urge families to:
✅ Always supervise children and teens near water
✅ Avoid swimming alone
✅ Use life jackets when boating or kayaking
✅ Be aware of water depth, currents, and hazards
Our deepest condolences go out to the teen’s family, friends, and the Oakland community as they mourn this devastating loss.

That is very sad. I often see swimmers up there on a very hot day and yeah, they think their world is their oyster, they really have no care in the world. But I always tell them, don’t swim alone. And make sure you are checking on all of your friends. So make sure they are okay, and they assure me, oh yeah, no problem. But then something like this happens. It is so sad.
