RIDGEWOOD , NJ— One of the nation’s three major credit bureaus, TransUnion, has confirmed a cyberattack that compromised the personal data of more than 4.4 million U.S. consumers.

The breach, disclosed on August 28, was traced back to a third-party application and occurred on July 28, with detection just two days later.

What Happened in the TransUnion Hack?

According to TransUnion, hackers gained access through an external application but did not breach the company’s core credit database or credit reports. The firm emphasized that swift action was taken to contain the incident.

While the company declined to identify the compromised application, Reuters has reported a rising trend of cyberattacks targeting Salesforce databases. Hackers often trick employees into granting access, allowing them to infiltrate cloud systems, steal sensitive data, and attempt extortion.

What TransUnion Is Offering Affected Consumers

To help those impacted, TransUnion is offering:

  • Two years of free access to its myTrueIdentity credit monitoring service

  • Fraud alerts and credit monitoring tools to track suspicious activity

  • Guidance on steps to protect against identity theft

Why This Matters

With over 4.4 million individuals affected, the breach highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in the credit reporting industry, which manages some of the most sensitive financial data in the U.S.

Cybersecurity experts warn that even when core databases are not directly compromised, third-party vendor risks pose a growing threat for large institutions.

What Consumers Should Do Now

If you think you may be affected by the TransUnion breach, consider these steps:

  1. Enroll in free monitoring provided by TransUnion.

  2. Check your credit reports regularly for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries.

  3. Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with all three bureaus if you suspect risk.

  4. Update passwords and be on alert for phishing attempts.
