Washington, DC – President Donald Trump has declared a public safety emergency in the nation’s capital, ordering an unprecedented federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department and activating 800 DC National Guard members. Attorney General Pam Bondi has been appointed to oversee the federal control of DC’s police operations, while DEA Administrator Terry Cole will serve as interim federal commissioner.
The administration says the effort will serve as a “model” for crime reduction strategies in other major U.S. cities facing similar public safety challenges.
A Rare Federal Intervention
Under the Home Rule Act, the president can assume control of DC’s local government functions in certain emergency situations. Such direct intervention in the city’s policing is rare, marking one of the few times in recent history that local law enforcement has been placed under federal command.
