Washington DC, President Donald Trump has nominated Dr. E.J. Antoni, a respected economist and outspoken critic of flawed government statistics, to serve as the next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The move signals Trump’s commitment to restoring transparency, accuracy, and public trust in America’s economic data.

In his announcement, Trump praised Antoni as the right leader for the job:

“Our economy is booming, and E.J. will ensure that the numbers released are HONEST and ACCURATE. I know E.J. Antoni will do an incredible job in this new role. Congratulations E.J.!”

The nomination comes shortly after Trump dismissed Biden-appointed commissioner Erika McEntarfer, accusing her of presiding over manipulated and unreliable data reporting. Antoni, who has long argued that the BLS must modernize its methods, has already hinted at bold reforms that could reshape how jobs and inflation data are tracked and published.

Who Is Dr. E.J. Antoni?

E.J. Antoni, Ph.D., currently serves as Chief Economist and Richard Aster Fellow at The Heritage Foundation’s Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget. His research and commentary are widely published in top outlets including Fox News, Wall Street Journal, National Review, Bloomberg, Washington Times, and CNBC. He is also a frequent guest on major television, radio, and podcast programs, where he provides sharp, data-driven insights on the U.S. economy.

Beyond his media presence, Antoni has testified before Congress and state legislatures, lectured at universities, and served in research roles with think tanks such as Unleash Prosperity. His academic expertise includes labor economics, monetary policy, and banking.

Why This Nomination Matters

Antoni has been one of the most consistent critics of BLS methodology—especially since the COVID-19 pandemic exposed deep flaws in the agency’s statistical models. He has pointed to frequent downward revisions in job numbers as proof that the data collection system needs a complete overhaul.

In an interview, Antoni explained:

“How can businesses plan—or how can the Fed conduct monetary policy—if they don’t know how many jobs are being created or lost? The credibility of this data is critical. Until it’s fixed, confidence in our economy will continue to erode.”

Antoni has argued that outdated statistical assumptions are distorting the reports, leaving policymakers and Wall Street without a clear picture of America’s economic health. He supports moving toward quarterly reports with greater accuracy rather than continuing to publish unreliable monthly estimates.

Critics Push Back—But Supporters See Reform Ahead

Unsurprisingly, Antoni’s nomination has drawn sharp criticism from establishment economists and political opponents who fear change to the traditional, bureaucratic process. But his supporters argue that his fresh perspective is exactly what the BLS needs.

For years, economists across the political spectrum have admitted that labor data often requires massive revisions months later—leaving businesses, investors, and policymakers guessing in real time. Antoni’s leadership could restore accuracy, timeliness, and trust in these crucial statistics.

What’s Next?

Antoni’s nomination must still clear the Senate for full confirmation. With a Republican-led Senate and Trump’s backing, approval is expected, though debate is likely to be heated.

If confirmed, Antoni would oversee the release of the July inflation report, which is expected to show consumer prices rising for a third straight month amid tariffs on imports. His first order of business: rebuilding confidence in America’s economic data.

Bottom Line

Trump’s choice of Dr. E.J. Antoni marks a turning point for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With his proven expertise, outspoken commitment to accuracy, and bold vision for reform, Antoni is poised to restore honesty and reliability to the nation’s most important economic reports.

This is not just a personnel change—it’s a chance to rebuild trust in the numbers that drive America’s economy.

  1. The only reason there is a lack of confidence in the data is because this administration is meddling with it. For the economy to function properly, they need to leave BLS and the Fed alone to function independently.

    2. The constant revisions to original reports are proof the data has been poor for a very long time. Check the web for TDS treatments.
