Washington DC, President Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, its parent company News Corp, and owner Rupert Murdoch after the paper published a story claiming Trump wrote a lewd letter to Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday.

The lawsuit, filed in Miami federal court on July 18, accuses the WSJ of libel and slander over what Trump calls a completely fabricated letter. The letter was allegedly part of a leather-bound birthday book gifted to Epstein in 2003, containing notes from various high-profile figures. According to the WSJ, Trump’s note ended with the words:

“Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.”

Trump, however, vehemently denies ever writing such a letter.

Trump Blasts WSJ on Truth Social

Before filing the lawsuit, Trump issued a fiery statement on Truth Social, directly calling out Rupert Murdoch and WSJ Editor Emma Tucker:

“I look forward to getting Rupert Murdoch to testify in my lawsuit against him and his ‘pile of garbage’ newspaper, the WSJ. That will be an interesting experience!!!”

Trump also claimed the newspaper ignored explicit warnings that the letter was a fake:

“The Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed was a FAKE. The Editor of the Wall Street Journal, Emma Tucker, was told directly by Karoline Leavitt, and by President Trump, that the letter was FAKE, but she didn’t want to hear it.”

He went on to accuse the WSJ of running a “false, malicious, and defamatory story” in a desperate attempt to remain relevant.

Trump’s History of Fighting the Media

Trump reminded followers that he has previously taken legal action against George Stephanopoulos/ABC News, CBS’s 60 Minutes, and others over similar claims.

“The Press has to learn to be truthful and not rely on sources that probably don’t even exist. If there were any truth at all to the Epstein Hoax, it would have been revealed by Comey, Brennan, Crooked Hillary, and other Radical Left Lunatics years ago,” Trump wrote.

In a follow-up post, Trump doubled down:

“The Wall Street Journal printed a FAKE letter, supposedly to Epstein. These are not my words, not the way I talk. Also, I don’t draw pictures. I told Rupert Murdoch it was a Scam… But he did, and now I’m going to sue his ass off, and that of his third-rate newspaper. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The WSJ Epstein Story Sparks Legal Firestorm

The Wall Street Journal article, published online July 17 and in print July 18, reignited long-standing public speculation about Epstein’s ties to powerful individuals. The paper has not yet commented on the lawsuit.

Trump’s legal team claims the WSJ intentionally ignored evidence debunking the letter’s authenticity and pursued the story purely to generate controversy.

Rupert Murdoch & WSJ Under Pressure

This lawsuit comes at a sensitive time for Rupert Murdoch, who is navigating multiple media controversies while overseeing News Corp amid shifting ownership deals. Legal experts predict this case could take months, if not years, to resolve.

Meanwhile, Trump allies are framing the lawsuit as another example of “fake news media attacks” aimed at undermining his reputation as he eyes a potential return to the White House.

What Happens Next?

  • Trump is seeking unspecified damages for libel and slander.

  • Rupert Murdoch and WSJ editors may be required to testify in court.

  • The lawsuit could reveal more about Epstein’s infamous network of connections if discovery moves forward.

The Wall Street Journal has yet to issue an official response, and it remains unclear if they will fight the lawsuit or attempt a settlement.
